Chief Banking Officer

SUMMARY:
The SVP - Chief Banking Officer is responsible for the oversight and management of all aspects of client banking production to ensure the maximization of company profits by providing leadership, direction, and administration. The SVP - Chief Banking Officer also generates business by building long-term trusted relationships with current and prospective clients. The SVP - Chief Banking Officer works collaboratively within the Bank’s senior management team. This position oversees the Business, Retail, Mortgage Banking Teams, and Cash Management.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES:
Strategic Leadership – 35%
- Collaborate with the senior management team to develop and implement an annual strategic plan, budget, operational, and performance goals to achieve and realize the bank’s plans.
- Advise the senior management team on key planning issues and make recommendations on important business decisions regarding future growth.
- Lead and participate in bank committees or focus groups, providing direction and recommendations that best align with bank goals and ongoing growth and improvement of the bank.
- Provide leadership to the overall organization. Work closely with Human Resources to identify talent from within and develop employees for future roles within the bank. Provide mentoring to further develop high-potential talent.
- Stay abreast of regulations and legislation, as well as other policy-making events that directly affect the bank.
- Represent the bank at various trade groups, training, and networking events.
- Serve in leadership or on boards or committees of nonprofits or governmental entities on a volunteer basis offering leadership, credit, and financial management insight.
- Maintain positive relationships with other banks regarding the sale and purchase of loan participations.
Management and Supervision – 35%
- Lead, mentor, and support:
- Business Banking Team
- Retail Banking Team
- Mortgage Banking Teams
- Cash Management Officer
- Provide planning and day-to-day leadership and direction to assigned employees by setting accountabilities, tasks, and assignments.
- Host frequently scheduled one-on-one meetings with direct reports to gain insight, feedback, and updates on contributions or projects.
- Work closely with Human Resources to identify talent with potential and develop employees for future roles within the bank. Provide mentoring to further develop high-potential talent.
- Review and update all commercial banking and cash management job descriptions to be consistent with future structure and roles of team members to best meet the vision and strategic objectives of the Bank.
- Create, update, and maintain written assigned Bank policies as applicable.
- Recognize training needs within the department and Bank, especially in the areas of setting meaningful KPIs, prioritizing work, tracking client interactions within bank reporting systems, sales styles and effectiveness, and other key training areas. Assist in the early detection of errors or problems and locate training opportunities.
- Serve as an active participant at internal project meetings and act as the subject matter expert for the Banking teams. The SVP Chief Banking Officer may act as the primary project owner of banking initiatives and also serves as the project/product champion for projects owned.
- Own and drive initiatives and tasks resulting from internal project management meetings.
- Partner with the Project Activation Officer and other members of internal project teams to execute initiatives as identified by the Bank’s approved project plan.
Credit Approval & Risk Management - 20%
- Recommend optimal credit structure and products for clients.
- Along with the SVP Chief Credit Officer and Credit Administration Manager, support Business Banking Associate(s) in their job responsibilities within the banking team.
- Work with Credit Analysts to complete thorough analysis and evaluation of all new and renewed loan requests.
- Prepare written submissions and presentations for consideration by the Loan Committee.
- Assist in managing the quality of the loan portfolio through coaching efforts of banking team members and collaboration with the Chief Credit Officer and President/Chief Executive Officer.
- Partner with the Chief Credit Officer to monitor existing procedures and establish new procedures that ensure the bank’s commercial and retail businesses are compliant with the bank’s credit policy and banking regulations.
- Partner with the Chief Credit Officer and Commercial Bankers in the collection of delinquent accounts while keeping management informed of collection activities and any significant problems.
- Assist Commercial Bankers in the thorough analysis and evaluation of all new and renewed loan requests.
- Prepare written submissions and presentations for consideration by the Loan Committee for own loans and review presentations of direct reports.
- Serve as a voting member on the Bank’s Loan Committee and other committees as deemed appropriate by management.
- Monitor existing and established procedures to assure that the Bank’s loan portfolio is managed and documented per the Bank’s lending policy and banking regulations.
- Proactively identify and manage risk through careful review of client financial statements and various internal reports. Work with Chief Credit Officer and clients to minimize loss.
Business Development – 10%
- Direct and monitor the production of loans, deposits, and fee income to ensure that the Bank meets established goals and objectives with respect to growth and profitability.
- Assist team members in the analysis and evaluation of prospective borrowers' financial information, management quality, collateral, industry risk, and business viability.
- Evaluate loan pricing and structure relative to risk to maintain Bank standards.
- Contribute to regular periodic portfolio reviews to identify changes in credit quality, ensuring overall portfolio quality that meets or exceeds expectations.
- Examine, evaluate, authorize, or recommend approval of credit applications for commercial and consumer loans and lines of credit. Ensure the bankers meet file documentation requirements.
- Contribute to the productivity of the Bank through personal business development efforts to generate new business.
- Monitor product delivery and quality while proactively working to resolve issues.
- Partner with the Chief Credit Officer and Bankers in the collection of delinquent accounts while keeping management informed of collection activities and any significant problems.
- Answer questions and resolve requests, keeping borrowers informed of Bank loan policies and services.
- Partner with the Chief Credit Officer to monitor existing procedures and establish new procedures that ensure the bank’s commercial and retail businesses are compliant with the bank’s credit policy and banking regulations.
- Develop, propose, and implement banking program policy and strategy by leading activities related to new product development.
- Prepare periodic production updates and reports for management and the Board of Directors.
- Assist in managing the quality of the loan portfolio through coaching efforts of banking team members and collaboration with the Chief Credit Officer and President/CEO.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist departments throughout the bank with special projects and functions.
- Perform all job functions and interactions with fellow bank employees, customers, vendors, and prospective customers within the guidelines of the Drake Bank Mission, Vision, and Core Values: Dedicated, Reliable, Authentic, Knowledgeable, and Ethical.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REGULATORY COMPLIANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Continually enhance knowledge of regulatory and compliance issues through completion of all required online training and attendance at in-house and external training presentations.
- Perform all job functions in accordance with Federal and State regulations and within banking policies.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business or a related field.
- Ten (10) or more years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Seven (7) or more years of progressively responsible banking work experience, with a minimum of five (5) years in a leadership role.
- Strong understanding of regulatory compliance, business development, credit underwriting, risk management, banking operations, products, policies, and procedures.
- Experience with loan policy and problem loan management.
- Experience and comfort supervising business development professionals.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Strong knowledge of business development techniques and skills.
- Strong knowledge of bank lending and collections programs, policies, and procedures.
- Strong knowledge of financial analysis and determination of creditworthiness.
- Familiarity with bank operations and retail bank services and pricing.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, and legal issues related to staff supervision and performance management, strategic planning, credit, and budget administration.
- Demonstrated ability to manage/lead complex projects and teams.
- Strong project management and time-management skills.
- Ability to establish and foster strong professional relationships with both internal and external customers, vendors, and community leaders.
- Ability to develop and manage the Banking enterprise in line with the organizational goals and objectives.
- Experience effectively managing staff through continuous direction, support, feedback, and coaching to ensure the attainment of the Bank’s service quality standards.
- Experience using various computer programs and systems, including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite and Fiserv Premier applications.

- The environment for this position is a private office that is mostly clean and comfortable. It may include some minor annoyances such as noise, odors, drafts, etc. The individual is in a non-confined office setting in which they are free to move about at will.
