Job Summary


The EPPIcenter is seeking a talented and passionate individual to join the bioinformatics team. This role will provide bioinformatics expertise to support research primarily focused on malaria, involving both targeted sequencing and whole genome data. The Bioinformatics Specialist will be responsible for programming activity in the areas of data collection, storage and access, developing computational pipelines, critically evaluating existing tools, statistical methods, analyzing pipeline outputs, and data visualization. Collaborating closely with researchers, the specialist will design and implement solutions to streamline data workflows, ensure accurate interpretation of results, and contribute to analysis for scientific publications.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $156,900 (Annual Rate).

The EPPIcenter (eppicenter.ucsf.edu) aims to advance the understanding of infectious disease to reduce global morbidity and mortality. We believe that the greatest success in the fight against infectious diseases will come through a highly interdisciplinary, systems epidemiology approach, connecting traditionally siloed theoretical work, technology development, generation and collection of empiric data, and analysis using statistical and mathematical modeling.

The Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases and Global Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is an internationally recognized global leader in clinical care, research, and education. With its home-base located at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG), the Division has been ranked as the top facility in the country for AIDS care since 1983.


Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in biological science, computational/programming, or related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Minimum 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • 1-2 years of relevant programming experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to critically assess and evaluate bioinformatics software, effectively communicating the strengths and limitations of tools.
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently or collaboratively as part of a team, learn quickly, meet deadlines, and demonstrate problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and professionally to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Thorough knowledge of modern biology and working knowledge of genomics.
  • Strong project management skills with proven ability to manage multiple tasks and shifting priorities effectively.
  • Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics programming and analysis using Python and/or R.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Proficient in using Git and adhering to development best practices.
  • Experience with Nextflow or similar workflow management languages.
  • An understanding of the limitations and common sequencing errors from associated laboratory techniques and/or the field of malaria research.
  • Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics methods, applications programming, web development, data structures, and working with relational databases (e.g. mySQL).
