The Division of Social Sciences at UC Santa Barbara has four guiding principles: to generate new knowledge about society; to make this knowledge accessible to diverse publics; to provide undergraduates with first-rate Social Science education; and to train the next generation of Social Science scholars. Brief Summary of Job Duties:
The Promoting Opportunity and Equity in Learning (PROPEL) Program supports 60-100 extreme low income, first generation, and underrepresented students on the UCSB campus majoring in the Social Sciences. The primary objective is to attract high achieving underrepresented students and support them to increase four-year graduation rates. Responsibilities include providing scholarships, academic support, training for graduate school/workforce, and maintaining social and mental health. Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. 1-3 years work experience in an academic environment. Solid knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Strong computer skills including Google Suite, Zoom, and Microsoft Office Suite. Good oral and written communication skills, including public speaking and presentation skills. Ability to exercise good decision-making skills. Possess a strong problem-solving orientation. Ability to work well independently and as part of a team. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with competing deadlines. Good organizational and interpersonal skills. Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. 4-6 years in relevant experience/training. Solid knowledge of UCSB systems including STAR system, BLUE, GOLD, Kronos. Knowledge of University processes and procedures related to the position. Knowledge of departmental/school/college courses and majors. Special Conditions of Employment: Satisfactory conviction history background check. Sexual Harassment Prevention Training for non-HEERA supervisors. UCSB is a Tobacco-Free environment. Job Functions and Percentages of Time: 50% Advising:
Manages all advising of PROPEL scholars, oversees and trains peer advisors, provides accurate information for students seeking advice on programs and courses, and maintains contact with advisors and counselors. 10% Admissions and Administration:
Responsible for PROPEL student identification, oversees accuracy of program materials, and evaluates student needs for referrals. 15% Management of PROPEL:
Prepares peer recruitment, hires and trains peer advisors, monitors budget compliance, and presents annual reports. 25% Fundraising and Grant Writing:
