Job Summary:

The Phlebotomist - I plays a vital role in providing excellent patient care by preparing specimens for laboratory testing and performing screening procedures. The Phlebotomist is responsible for drawing high-quality blood samples while fostering an atmosphere of trust and confidence with patients.

Principal Job Duties:
  • The following duties may include but are not necessarily limited to:
  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, decontaminate equipment, and update patient information.
  • Greet patients appropriately and treat all customers in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Collect specimens according to established procedures and clearly explain the process of venipuncture (blood draws) or other specimen collections (e.g., urine or fecal).
  • Reduce patient anxiety by providing a calm and supportive environment during the collection process.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using straight needles and/or butterfly needles for blood collection.
  • Fully understand and follow physicians' orders for specimen collection and processing.
  • Ensure laboratory requisition forms are matched correctly with specimen tubes, label and process specimens as required by the test order (centrifuge, split, freeze, etc.).
  • Verify that test requisitions or computer labels are accurate to ensure 100% correctness.
  • Package specimens properly for transport, ensuring the integrity of the specimen during transit.
  • Store specimen samples according to required temperatures and follow the correct protocol for labeling, collection containers, and transport procedures.
  • Maintain proficiency in proper collection methods and specimen processing.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations to ensure workplace safety and adherence to guidelines.
  • Attend annual department trainings to stay current with practices and regulations.
  • Answer telephone inquiries, read laboratory results, and provide accurate information as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state in which you are employed (certification required for CA, LA, NV, and WA).

Experience and Required Skills:
  • Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting (0-2 years of experience preferred).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent patient interaction skills, both in person and by phone.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
