The Colleges seek a part-time faculty member in Biology. The ideal candidate will share the Colleges’ commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.
Please Note: College of San Mateo is currently hiring a part-time instructor specializing in general biology with lecture and lab teaching experience. Primary teaching responsibility would be Biology 110: General Principles of Biology , a face-to-face, in-person, on-campus course. An instructor is needed to teach Biology 110 during Fall 2022 and Spring 2023, and potentially in Summer 2022. The preferred candidate has previous lab teaching experience and would be ready to join the department no later than this Fall.
This position is a “pool” position meaning that openings may or may not be currently available. The District maintains a “pool” of applications for positions which are needed on an ongoing basis at Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College. The advantage of “pool” positions is when a position becomes available, the Dean may immediately begin screening applications from the available pool of applicants without having to post a position and wait while the position is being advertised. Your application for this position will be kept current for a period of two years.
Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions of this position include the following:
1. Teach all courses offered in the biology curriculum.
2. Assist in curriculum revisions and new course development.
3. Consult with students during regularly scheduled office and lab hours.
4. Maintain expertise in current technologies.
5. Serve as a member of division and college committees.
6. Perform other professional duties as required by contract and general institutional needs.
Minimum Qualifications
• Possession of a Master’s or above in any biological science OR Bachelor’s in any biological science AND Master’s or above in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science OR the equivalent (see below)
• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Academic preparation for, or successful experience in, teaching biology, preferably at the college level.
2. Knowledge of successful teaching techniques that engage students in their own learning, motivate students to develop higher order thinking skills, and ensure consistent and appropriate monitoring of student progress.
3. Commitment to maintain currency in the discipline, and related technology appropriate to instruction.
4. Commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals.
5. Enthusiasm for, understanding of, and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college.
6. The capacity to reflect on and evaluate one’s pedagogy and to examine its effects critically.
7. Skill and experience to motivate students from a broad spectrum of cultural, socioeconomic, and language backgrounds.
8. Ability to communicate effectively in both written and spoken language.
9. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
10. Ability to use instructional strategies designed for diverse learning styles and academic goals.
11. Commitment to the SMCCCD goal of integrating writing across the curriculum.
12. Experience in and commitment to the use of computer-based technology appropriate to the subject areas of the assignment and willingness to expand this technology.
