Job Description

The Manufacturing Engineer will support our operations departments.  This role will be responsible for all manufacturing processes in these areas.  The other primary functions of this role will be the support of daily production issues, and process improvements through advanced manufacturing methods.  The support of lean and six sigma initiatives along with cost improvement activities will be a primary function of the Manufacturing Engineer.  

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

New Products Development & Equipment Support

  • Provide manufacturing impact/constraints/perspectives on new product designs in design reviews or project meetings and work closely with product development engineers and business development / product managers to bring new products to market

  • Oversee, or in some cases perform, new product prototype tests on the production floor

  • Generate assembly and detail drawings for manufacturing equipment or mold prototypes for new products

  • Assist in troubleshooting and correcting manufacturing-related product development difficulties in product design, quality defects, maintenance, processes, equipment, and/or molds

  • Oversee, and interface with, vendors providing manufacturing equipment or tooling necessary to new product development

  • Support product development in anything needed as related to manufacturing 

Existing Products Support for New Manufacturing Equipment

  • Oversee projects to design/acquire/build improved replacements or upgrades/retrofits for existing equipment or entirely new equipment designs/builds to improve productivity and quality on existing products (molding machines, dryers, blenders, robots, winders, conveyors, dies, molds, vision systems, inspection systems, custom automation, etc.)

  • Assist with production/plant floor changes and improvements decision making (generating "to scale" CAD layouts for fitting new equipment or for equipment moves, analyzing feasibility with time studies, etc.)

Existing Products Support for Existing Manufacturing Products/Equipment

  • Oversee or accomplish hands-on equipment redesigns, upgrades, or retrofits on existing equipment to help with productivity, quality, reduced downtime/maintenance, etc.

  • Assist Maintenance with troubleshooting and solving more technical problems and issues on existing equipment

  • Acquire production or maintenance supplies or custom parts that require more technical involvement for purchasing

  • Assist with changes or improvements to existing products/packaging that require technical assessment/analysis/involvement

  • Analyze failure modes of equipment and components in an effort to reduce future breakdowns/ downtime.

General

  • Recommends and implements improvements and/or modifications in sequence of operations, equipment utilization, and related matters.

  • Responsible for all phases of assigned engineering projects, ensuring the successful conclusion of all phases within an appropriate time and at the appropriate cost. 

  • Implements equipment and/or process improvements to meet quality standards, performs feasibility studies and solves problems.   

  • Under general direction, responsible for the completion of assigned complex or long-term engineering projects within budgetary and scheduling guidelines. 

  • Reporting via email or by holding/hosting meetings as necessary to communicate and generate critical interactions with department/project leaders, co-workers, and management on all of the above categories and items of work responsibility

  • Create, manage, and continually update own detailed prioritized "To Do" list

  • Support health and safety initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in manufacturing, mechanical, or electrical engineering with 4 years of industrial/manufacturing experience OR GED/HS Diploma with 7+ years of industrial/manufacturing experience.  Injection molding experience is a plus.

  • Proficiency with CAD mechanical design in 3D and 2D (SolidWorks preferred)

  • Experience with ladder logic PLC programming a plus (Allen Bradley and Automation Direct  controllers/software preferred)

  • Experience with various controls (servo/stepper motor and motion, temperature, hydraulic proportional valves, etc.) a plus

  • Experience doing electrical systems/controls design, wiring, and debugging/troubleshooting a plus

  • Experience with basic machine shop fabrication (milling machine, saw, etc.) a plus

  • Experience in plastics manufacturing equipment such as extrusion, injection molding, tooling, mold design, material handling equipment, custom automation, etc. a plus

  • Experience in capital equipment requests, financials, and procurement is a plus

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship
