Description
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director, Dental Services, the Dental Hygienist is responsible for promoting better hygiene awareness of the value of good oral health. The Dental Hygienist promotes patient self-management and empowers patients/families to achieve maximum levels of wellness and independence. The Dental Hygienist will seek opportunities to learn from others, be open to adapting best practices into their work environment. The Dental Hygienist is committed to the constant pursuit of organizational excellence and improving the health status of the community.
• Preparation
o Review medical and dental history of patient
o Take blood pressure of adult patients
• Patient Care
o Scale supra and subgingival calculus at discretion of the dentist
o Apply oral prophylaxis and topical fluoride
o Take x-ray, bitewing and other radiographs as indicated by the dentist
o Apply pit and fissure sealants
o Complete oral health counsel screenings for each patient
o Refer patients to the dentist after hygiene appointments as needed
o Place patients on a periodic recall system
o Document patient progress in medical record and complete all charges in Dentrix
Qualifications
Qualifications and Skills:
Requires a Mass State License as a dental Hygienist and other federal/state credentials as necessary.

- Patient Education
- Teach patients proper dental care during screening and mouth rinse programs
- Clinical Maintenance
- Maintain and sterilize instruments, equipment and operatories
- Record hygiene supplies
- Maintain a safe patient care environment
- Clean work site after each visit
- Patient Safety
- Assures that service standards, policies and procedures meet or exceed regulatory standards (Joint Commission etc)
- Applies the principles of standard precautions
- Clinical Support
- Actively participates in care team huddles, clinical meetings, and quality improvement activities
- Contributes to the orientation and development of new personnel, as well as mentor peers and promote collaborative teamwork
- Fill in for Dental Assistants when necessary
