Staff Accountant - American Bar Endowment (ABE)

The Staff Accountant is responsible for the preparation of the routine journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations for the monthly close, processing of accounts payable, and depositing and recording cash receipts.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Prepare journal entries for all routine general ledger activities, including cash transactions, payroll, investment activity, insurance premiums, expense allocations, and all accrual and reclass or correcting journal entries.
  • Prepare balance sheet reconciliations for all cash, investment, fixed asset, insurance-related balances, grants, prepaid, and other accrual balances.
  • Process payments of expenses on a weekly basis using Bill.com and ABE’s insurance database. Ensure payments are made timely and accurately. Post expenses and payments in the general ledger.
  • Reconcile the corporate credit card transactions and post activity to the general ledger.
  • Manage and record all cash receipts on a timely basis. Ensure cash receipts and related revenue are properly recorded and reconcile all cash accounts.
  • Prepare IRS 1099 filings.
  • Prepare audit schedules and other analysis, as necessary, for assigned areas.
  • Prepare schedules for the annual IRS Form 990 filing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

2 years of audit or industry experience (nonprofit experience preferred).

SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of accounting theory and practice.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), especially as it relates to routine transactions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Ability to take ownership to minimize errors; ability to communicate corrections or changes in a proactive and productive manner.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communications (written and oral, including via telephone, email, virtual communications, and in person); ability to communicate proactively regarding project status, barriers, and possible solutions.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to accurately apply professional knowledge, skills, expertise, and judgment to achieve excellent customer service in all interactions.
  • Ability to work well with fellow team members.

This position offers a hybrid work environment with a mix of remote and in-office work.
