Job Summary:

Key Responsibilities:

Benefactor Development, Portfolio Management and Discovery Work (70%)

  • Works to cultivate existing and new benefactor relationships (i.e.: through thank you calls, prospecting/cold calls, discovery visits, stewardship touches, etc.) with the intent of sustaining and increasing the relationship with benefactors and potential benefactors on behalf of and in support of the CU Anschutz Medical Campus. The benefactor pool and pipeline is comprised of CU Anschutz alumni, grateful patients and/or their loved ones/families, leadership volunteers, CU Anschutz faculty, organizations and community members.
  • Develops and manages a portfolio of a minimum of 100+ individual, corporate and foundation benefactors and potential benefactors capable of making leadership annual gifts (i.e.: $1,000+$). Goals relating to personal contacts, number of proposed gifts, and prospect identification to be co-created with and approved by leadership.
  • Plans and implements programs that include measurable targets for number of personal visits and high impact contacts, proposals, assists on others proposals and new prospects qualified/disqualified, all approved by management.
  • Works daily to ensure timely, accurate completion of discovery outreach, proposals, pledges and fund agreements.
  • Implements, develops and follows processes around portfolio rigor, tracking next steps, portfolio management.
  • Documents prospect strategies and contact reports, provides personal outreach to new potential benefactors, implements general correspondence to solicit and steward leadership gifts and cultivate major gift conversations.
  • Provides pro-active cultivation and stewardship to mid-level benefactors and portfolio via personal outreach, updates on breakthroughs and discovery work to determine interest.
  • Compiles materials regarding research breakthroughs and exciting opportunities to be able to educate and inspire benefactors in their area of interest.

Benefactor Strategy and Coordination (25%)

  • Develops and maintains a deep understanding of institutional priorities, academic programs, and centers of excellence in order to translate these assets into compelling funding opportunities and align them with funders' interests.
  • Works closely with CU Anschutz Medical Campus major gift officers, internal directors of development, the Lead Strategist for Philanthropic Growth, benefactor relations staff and appropriate Central Office staff (i.e.: Gifting Planning, Annual Giving, etc.) to develop and implement fundraising strategies in order to meet established goals and objectives.
  • Facilitates productive relationships between benefactors and CU administrators, faculty and staff to ensure effectiveness of programs.
  • Thanks supporters within 1 week of their gift through phone calls, personal emails and notecards and identifies supporters who want to learn more and could be potential prospects for major giving and planned gifts through discovery work.
  • Stewards existing donor relationships, with a goal of retaining leadership level donations year-over-year

Other (5%)

  • Represents the University at events in order to support the University and meet/cultivate benefactors.
  • Able to travel periodically
  • And various other duties or tasks as assigned and/or needed.

Supervision Received: Reports to the Senior Director of Development

Supervision Exercised: No direct reports.

Work Location:

Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 1-3 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree + 1 years of professional fundraising experience or experience in related fields like nonprofit administration, public affairs, or business development, including managing funding relationships with individuals, corporations or foundations.
    • Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis



Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in higher education environment or a medical campus environment.
  • 1-3 years experience in Development or and Advancement environment
  • Professional experience calling donors, constituents, and/or customers
  • Professional experience managing relationships with donors, constituents, and/or customers

Competencies:

  • Expert knowledge of BSR Advance and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Expert knowledge of general office procedures, protocol and professionalism; expert knowledge of Business English, spelling, punctuation and grammar.
  • Expert ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, adapt to changing priorities, manage time and meet deadlines.
  • Solid knowledge of fundraising concepts, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment, develop effective interpersonal relationships, provide superior customer service, and communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Proven knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet software, Email, and internet access software.
  • Solid ability to coordinate technical presentations including hardware set up.
  • Solid knowledge of database management with the ability to query reports, utilize data, and convert programs.
  • Solid ability to work with accuracy and attention to detail and solid knowledge of money handling and mathematics. - Solid knowledge of multi-line phone system.
  • Solid knowledge of fundraising concepts.
  • Personal computer proficiency required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.
  • Strong development skills including comfort with cold calling, leading effective one-on-one visits, and utilizing multiple modes of communication to achieve results.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $70,000-$75,000

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
