POSITION SUMMARY
Phlebotomist collects laboratory specimens for testing; performs and record test results for waived and moderate complexity testing, and must follow laboratory policy, documentation standards, and all applicable regulatory requirements.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Minimum Work Experience: None required beyond education/training requirement
Required Licenses/Certifications: None
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Moderate ability with computer systems and data entry. Ability to establish good working relationships with various professional, technical and nontechnical staff. Ability to keep blood drawing trays and equipment clean and well organized. Ability to perform blood collection procedures using skin (micro) puncture and venipuncture. Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English effectively at a level appropriate for the job. Ability to train students as needed. Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures, laboratory precautions, and use
and care of laboratory equipment in assigned area. Knowledge of phlebotomy methods and techniques.
Preferred Qualification: Certification in phlebotomy or Medical Assisting
JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

6. Participates in training or teaching programs by providing assistance and guidance to students, new and current employees.
7. Signs off competencies for waived testing only as appropriate.
8. Assists in identification of opportunities for improvements in the laboratory (i.e. employee training, process improvement...etc.).
9. Understands and complies with good laboratory practice, regulatory and accreditation requirements.
10. Participates in quality assurance activities as assigned.
11. Communicates to Lab Leadership on concerns affecting laboratory operations.
12. Communicates critical values and testing delays to physicians, nursing staff, clients, and other hospital personnel.
13. Communicates and handles problems with customers, physicians and other hospital staff and responds to their needs in a timely manner.
14. Maintains positive patient identification for all such samples processed, using defined protocols.
15. Determines suitability of specimen for analysis, following established procedures, policies, and guidelines.
16. Demonstrates skills in specimen receiving, processing, including the LIS.
17. Prepares specimens for reference laboratory testing, ensures specimens are submitted in a timely manner.
18. Performs waived and moderate analytical process, calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting under the direction of the technical staff/supervisor.
19. Maintains adequate inventory of reagents and supplies as appropriate.
20. Performs other duties as needed.
