SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under direct supervision of the Native American Culture & Education Program Coordinator. The Native American Cultural Arts and Educational trainer will create and deliver cultural instruction for the purpose of culture preservation and revitalization of culture and language. The On-Call Educational Trainer will be assigned to various program projects as needed and locations to promote efficient and effective services. The Educational Trainer will instruct learning sessions at various school and district sites and within tribal communities during the school day, as well as some evenings, weekends, and school vacation days.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide instructional services for student's Pre-K through 5th grades in Native American culture and arts. Training is performed in a classroom or training room environment guiding students and families through cultural activities in which the trainer specializes. The trainer must be proficient in the subject area and instruction of program areas above with the ability to respond to questions and provide resources and explanations as available. The trainer will provide culturally appropriate materials and a learning atmosphere that maintains a safe environment for exploration and collaboration. The trainer establishes a space where culture is celebrated, and participants feel empowered. This position collaborates with the Natchez Elementary staff, Native American Culture & Education Program Staff, Numu Language Community Specialist, Numu Language Certified Teacher Specialist and other WCSD staff (such as Special Education, SEL/MTSS, Curriculum & Development, Striving Readers, Assessment, Career & Technical Education, Counseling, and Early Childhood) to ensure all supplies are available and ready for the project. Additionally, the trainer communicates learning expectations to students. This trainer provides cultural presentation for educational and cultural outreach events. Finally, the Educational Trainer will collaborate with other Tribes' staff to develop and nurture relationships and partnerships. Other programs are added as requested and needed for curriculum or school, department, or program support. As appropriate, trainers must be familiar with Nevada Academic Content Standards and training applications.

When assigned to the Native American Culture and Education Program, the incumbent will provide instructional services for families in different areas of expertise. Parent University learning sessions are performed in a classroom or training room environment. Trainer must be proficient in subject area and instruction of program with the ability to respond to questions and provide resources and explanations as available.

The tasks of the on-call educational cultural trainer will require a moderate level of autonomy, guided by the goals of Native American Culture & Education Program, as well as the Family-School Partnerships.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Any combination equivalent to education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
AND

Two (2) years of experience guiding cultural activities with students/youth

AND
  1. Demonstrated strong proficiency in Native American cultural practice, artistry, storytelling, etc.

Knowledge of: Technology required for training equipment. In addition, when assigned to Native American Culture & Education Program, firsthand understanding of working with underrepresented families; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively. Native American cultural practices or artistry. Knowledge of the history corresponding to the practices demonstrated.

Skill at: Working with small or large group facilitation or trainings experience; good communication skills; ability to read & write in English clearly; ability to work within district curriculum requirements; and the ability to communicate orally in large and small group settings. Being able to effectively respond to cultural questions. The ability to reflect on one's own teaching; respond to feedback; and adjust and improve one's own teaching as experience is gained. Ability to incorporate traditional customs in a course of study. Strong teamwork, and willingness to work a flexibly schedule per school determined scheduling or community.

License/Certificate: Possession of or ability to obtain a State of Nevada driver license with a driving record acceptable to the district; ability to drive and maintain mobile unit.

Special Considerations: Must be able to work a flexible schedule, which may include morning, afternoons, evening, or weekend hours. This is an on-call position, working at various school sites and community locations during regular school hours as well as evening and weekend hours.

Full-time WCSD Employees are ineligible to apply.

Part-time WCSD Employees may be considered for the On-Call position, but only up to the meeting the 40-hour work week. No overtime will be paid.

Salary

$35.00 per hour (Social Security Deduction)

This position is non-PERS compensable.

Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year. New employees hired by Washoe County School District are normally placed on the entry step of the grade of the position. View the salary schedules here.

Additional Job Information

This position is grant-funded, ending September 2027 and is contingent upon continued funding. The hiring administrator may retain incumbent for the duration of the grant without re-advertising.

Please be advised health insurance premiums are paid by employees at a prorated percent for those working less than full time.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
