Job Description / Essential Elements:
FRANKLIN-MCKINLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT
CLASS TITLE: CUSTODIAN
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned Principal, perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school site or facility to maintain assigned areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition on an assigned shift.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Perform routine custodial activities at assigned District school site; sweep, scrub, mop, wax and polish floors and vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices and other work areas; spot clean and shampoo carpets. E
Clean classrooms, restrooms, showers, locker rooms, gym, cafeteria, offices and related facilities as assigned; spot mop spills and remove gum and debris. E
Clean and disinfect drinking fountains, sinks, toilets, showers and urinals; fill dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper and feminine hygiene items; clean mirrors, tile and windows. E
Wash windows and walls; remove graffiti from walls as needed. E
Clean chalkboards and erasers and empty pencil sharpeners. E
Replace light bulbs and lighting tubes; dust and polish furniture and woodwork and make minor, non-technical repairs as needed. E
Lock and unlock doors and gates as assigned. E
Maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines; turn alarm system on or off as assigned by the position; report suspicious or unauthorized individuals on campus; report safety, sanitary and fire hazards to appropriate authority; report need for maintenance repairs to appropriate authority. E
Dispose of trash according to established procedures; wash out trash cans and follow established sanitation procedures and standards. E
Operate cleaning equipment such as vacuums, buffer and polisher, carpet shampooer, scrubbers, high-pressure sprayer, and manual and power sweepers and power blower. E
Clean tables, chairs and floors after breakfast and lunch periods as assigned. E
Raise or lower flags as assigned. E
Set up gymnasium and/or other facilities for classes and events as required; move furniture as needed; set up chairs, tables, bleachers and other facilities for special events and activities; clean up debris following events.
Respond to emergency cleanups such as spills; maintain records of observed maintenance and repair needs and safety issues.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
Basic methods, materials, tools and equipment used in custodial work and routine maintenance.
Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
Proper lifting techniques.
Ability to:
Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school site or facility to maintain assigned areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition.
Use cleaning materials, equipment and methods according to pre-determined standards.
Learn and apply knowledge of the schedules, procedures and use of equipment and supplies used in custodial work.
Learn appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
Maintain tools and equipment signed in clean working order and provide proper security.
Perform minor non-technical repairs.
Observe and report need for maintenance and repair.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Meet schedules and time lines.
Communicate effectively with others.
Inspect and assure the security of facilities during assigned shift.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with others.
Maintain regular attendance.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above and some experience performing routine custodial duties.

Indoor environment.
Physical demands:
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate small hand and power tools and equipment.
Seeing to perform custodial work.
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
Reaching overhead, above the shoulders or horizontally.
Lifting, carrying, moving, pushing or pulling heavy objects.
Climbing ladders to clean and replace lights.
Hazards:
Exposure to cleaning chemicals.
Working at heights.
