What You Will Do

The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division conducts experiments to generate high-quality data necessary to maintain a safe and reliable nuclear stockpile and to support global security. The Division fields, diagnoses, and conducts subcritical experiments, hydrodynamic tests, and focused high-explosive experiments at local firing sites and at the Nevada National Security Site. J Division also operates the Dual Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) Facility, the nation's premier hydrodynamic testing resource. The Division continually works with the Nevada National Security Site, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, the Department of Energy, and other partners to enhance the capabilities necessary to certify and ensure the safe, secure, and reliable performance of nuclear weapons' components, materials, and systems.

J-2, in collaboration with external experts and other LANL divisions, is responsible for the development of engineering standards and for the design, analysis, and procurement of impulsively loaded vessels and structures. J-2 also performs Remaining Life Assessments and Fitness-for-Service evaluations to analyze inherent fabrication flaws or damages resulting from use and recommends essential repairs for continued service. The group maintains the inventory of pressure vessels and structures necessary for J-Division in support of Stockpile Stewardship, and various R&D programs. An experienced mechanical drafter is needed to support the group's mission.

The Dynamic Structure, Design, & Engineering (J-2) Group within Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division is seeking a Mechanical Designer/Drafter. The position will be filled at either Drafter/Designer level 3 or 4, depending on the skills and experience of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if candidate is hired at the higher level. The Mechanical Drafter will be responsible for supporting the engineering team's design of R&D structures and hardware. This will entail working closely with the test and design engineers to provide detailed drawing sets for test configurations, fabrication of hardware, and future structure designs for R&D purposes. The candidate will work within multiple programs and must possess the organizational skills to adapt to evolving R&D design requirements.

Designer/Drafter 3 ($63,200 - $99,000)

The successful candidate will:
  • Adhere to engineering polices, programs, procedures and practices
  • Uses high-level, three-dimensional parametric CAD systems to develop multi-discipline design documents. Demonstrate working knowledge of second CAD system. Develops specifications.
  • Create complete drawing packages that require minimial checking
  • Create comples, large assemblies using prametric models and proper mating conditions
  • Applies sound knowledge of engineering materials and their suitability for component fabrication. Makes materials decisions of design packages.
  • Applies proficient knowledge of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Y14.5 or Laboratory drafting manual, as appropriate to job duties.
  • Participates in design reviews and resolves design conflicts.
