Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system at UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital as a Radiology Technician Special Procedures in the Interventional Radiology department. Here, you will take general radiographic films in the department and with mobile x-ray units in other areas of the hospital; assists with fluoroscopy; assist in teaching radiology students; prepare charge slips and other records as required.  This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

Eligible for a Sign-On Bonus up to $10,000

Under the supervision of the Chief Technologist – Interventional Radiology performs all of the duties of the radiologic technologist and in addition assists the radiologist in the preparation for and performance of specialized procedures requiring advanced on the job training for both inpatients and outpatients of all ages

Essential Job Functions

  • Ensures that each patient order is completed as ordered
  • Maintains attendance and tardiness according to hospital standards
  • Ensures the performance of daily quality control on instrumentation per department protocol
  • Maintain all records and documentation as required by personnel for DVN Inspections
  • Ensure radiation protection and safety practices for technologists and others in accordance with prescribed standards. (except US/MRI)
  • Make minor adjustments to equipment as deemed necessary
  • Adhere to all prescribed safety procedures in the performance of their duties
  • Checks quality of examinations and performs repeats if necessary
  • Provides patient and student with explanation of protocol and procedures when applicable
  • Maintains awareness of safety hazards and use of equipment to prevent damage to personnel and patients
  • Reports equipment needing repair to Manager/Lead technologist immediately
  • Obtains a complete history from the patient and/or chart prior to implementing procedures
  • Performs imaging operations on assigned patients to obtain optimum exams
  • Maintains an orderly work area to ensure maximum efficiency
  • Assists other staff when work is completed
  • Exhibits timely, satisfactory completion of patient’s assignments with minimal assistance, as evidenced by no overtime unless requested and approved by supervisor
  • Documents tests, procedures, to be performed on chart, and communicates this to appropriate person, and follows through to assure orders are completed with no documented errors noted
  • Properly documents all unusual incidents
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with production and quality standards
  • Research and retrieve vital patient information (i.e. lab, medications, allergies, and documents on permanent procedure form)
  • Utilizes Hi-IQ system for patient schedules and processing
  • Administers contrast material as assigned and/or required, for procedure
  • Prepares surgical trays and instruments for radiologist.
  • Be knowledgeable of the names and purposes of several emergency medications
  • Research and retrieve vital patient information (i.e. lab, medications, allergies, and documents on permanent procedure form)
  • Assists radiologist in IR procedures
  • Observes the confidentiality of department information 
  • Introduces self to patient by name and title 100% of time.
  • Ensures the explanation of procedures and protocols are given to patients and significant others within 5 minutes of patient's entering the department for all patient exams.
  • Ensures the performance of the imaging process on the appropriate patient, following established procedures, and as prescribed by the physician.
  • Monitors studies for proper and adequate labeling, marking and history for all patient treatments.
  • Ensures observance of safety standards in compliance with legal requirements and department regulations.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of age specific factors necessary to perform duties safely and effectively.
  • Displays patience and tact when dealing with patients' families and other health professionals
  • Preserves patient dignity, privacy and modesty always following all HIPPA guidelines

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an AMA approved school of Radiologic Technology
  • Maintains certification with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
  • Active BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Retains an active Radiography accreditation with the Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety

Preferred Skill

  • Must have intimate and thorough knowledge of sophisticated equipment involved in Interventional Radiology
  • Should be aggressive, with ability to work under pressure; to react quickly and accurately to problem situations

Compensation & Benefits Overview

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits.  The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
