Summary:
The Phlebotomist demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant and the commitment to provide Extraordinary Care for every Generation.
This individual has the documented training appropriate for the testing performed prior to analyzing patient specimens. Testing includes test authorized by the Laboratory Medical Director. The training insures the skills required for proper specimen collection, handling, processing and transporting. The skills required are limited laboratory testing, proper instrument use, performing preventative maintenance and quality control policies under the supervision of the Coordinator/Manager.

Assists in the training of new employees under direct control of the Coordinator or Lead.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Performs all necessary clerical duties including, but not limited to logging into and answering vocera, answering telephones and logging specimens collection.
Maintains proper communication with physicians, nursing staff, laboratory personnel, coworkers, Coordinators, Leads and Managers.
Follows laboratory procedures for specimen collection and suitability for testing.(Perform waived tests ordered by a physician or authorized personnel using approved methodology.)
Maintains records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
Adheres to the laboratory quality control policiesas it pertains to moderate complex testing.
Document all activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed including troubleshooting.
Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results.
Immediately notify the General Supervisor or designated Laboratory Charge Medical Technologist who will correct the problem or immediately notify the Coordinator or Lead.
Complies with all Covenant and Laboratory policies, procedures and safety practices.
Demonstrate working knowledge of appropriate safety protocol to include universal precautions, GHS safety program, use of personal protective equipment in designated areas, and perform proper hand washing techniques.
Collects all specimens by venipuncture and skin puncture technique upon physician order in a timely fashion utilizing proper technique.
Assists nursing with blood draws from venous access devices.
Properly identifies patients according to the patient identification procedure at all times.
Inspects all specimens prior to transport, for proper labeling requirements and specimen type.
Transports specimens in a timely manner via the most appropriate method to ensure turn-around-time is met utilizing the pneumatic tube system or physical transportation to the Laboratory.
Other information:
EDUCATION
* High School education or equivalent.
* College level Biology or Chemistry (Preferred)
CREDENTIALS
ASCP Phlebotomy certification within 6 months of hire preferred.
Current ASCP or NHA Phlebotomy certification (and continued maintenance)
SKILLS
* LIS Applications, strong verbal and communication skills.
EXPERIENCE
Completion of a NACCLS approved or two-part formal phlebotomy program, with documenting of 100 (minimum) successful venipuncture collections obtained during clinical rotation preferred.
1-3 years of phlebotomy experience preferred.
Knowledge of Computer Applications, strong verbal and communication skills.
Demonstrate a positive attitude in the workplace showing dependability, cooperation and desire to produce the most accurate, timely and cost effective results attainable.
Demonstrates excellent customer service.
Ability to adapt and prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment.
