The Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire District is currently accepting applications for full-time Firefighter/EMT and Firefighter/Paramedic ( FF/PM preferred ).
Applicants must possess a valid Iowa driver's license. Minimum requirements are certification as an Iowa or National Firefighter I ( Firefighter II preferred ), Hazardous Materials Operations and Iowa Emergency Medical Technician - Basic certification or Paramedic certification. Copies of all required certifications need to be submitted with your application.
Must be at least 18 years old, but less than 65 years old, to apply.
Firefighter/EMT and Paramedic Wages for July 1, 2024- June 30, 2025
Step 1 Firefighter/EMT: $59,147 Step 1 Firefighter/Paramedic: $66,880
Step 2 Firefighter/EMT: $61,513 Step 2 Firefighter/Paramedic: $69,556
Step 3 Firefighter/EMT: $63,974 Step 3 Firefighter/Paramedic: $72,338 To be considered for Step 2 or 3 (Lateral Entry), applicants must provide proof of full-time experience in an agency comparable to the Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire District for two/three years.
The Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire District operates out of 3 stations with 3-5 personnel each on a 48/96-hour tour and responds to over 4200 runs per year.
Individuals interested in applying for a position must submit an employment application with copies of current certifications. This position will be open until filled, and applications will be reviewed as received.
Successful completion of post-offer criminal background screening, drug test, and physical required for all positions.

Supplemental Information: Applicants are expected to possess a current (within 1 year of date of application) physical agility evaluation (PAE) and a written exam conducted by the Central Iowa Fire and EMS Testing Consortium. More information on the CIFETC written test and PAE can be Successful candidates will participate in an interview which will be conducted with Chief Officers and mid-level supervision to move forward in the process. Dates and times for interviews are TBD and will be held at 6373 Merle Hay Road, Johnston, 50131.
