Job Summary:

Prepares expectant mothers and support person for childbirth including imparting knowledge related to pregnancy, labor, delivery, postpartum, cesarean birth, birth alternatives and teaching tools to use during the actual childbirth experience. Provides health education for patients participating in childbirth, infant care and breastfeeding classes with the goal of improving the outcome of every pregnancy.

Job Requirements:

Education and Work Experience: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent (some certifications will require Bachelor's): Preferred

Licenses/Certifications: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Basic Life Support (BLS OR HS-BLS OR RQIBLS) certification: Required Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification: Preferred Childbirth Educator Certificate: Required within two years of hire Lactation Educator Certificate or equivalent: Preferred Basic Life Support (BLS) or Healthstream Basic Life Support (HS-BLS) or RQIBLS or Heartsaver CPR (CPR): Required Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator (LCCE) or CCE-CAPPA or Certified Childbirth Educator-ICEA (CCE-ICEA) or Bradley Certified Childbirth Educator (BCCE): Required

Essential Functions: Conducts large array of patient classes focused on childbirth, women's and infant health. Assists with development and evaluation of content, instructional methods and materials. Coordinates, schedules and presents program content in learning styles that are applicable to the learner. Evaluates the patient's response to health education as it relates to the established goal. Performs and monitors follow up-calls made to patients. Maintains communications with appropriate colleagues and leadership to ensure that any problems during instruction are promptly communicated. Applies knowledge of the principles of growth and development to identify patient and family requirements relative to women of childbearing age and support persons. Develops and implements health education programs designed to increase awareness and knowledge to patients planning to give birth. Evaluates the patients response to health education as it relates to the established goals and makes adjustments as needed. Keeps up-to-date on changes in labor and delivery technology to keep program material current. Exhibits understanding and knowledge required to provide information and service to all clients. Identifies crisis situations and acts accordingly. Interacts with participants throughout the course periods. Consults with department leadership regarding patient care delivery systems to achieve desired patient outcomes. Documents relevant data in the medical record. Ensures safe transfer/transport of patients at all times. Follows up on patient referrals as needed. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
