Job Summary:

The Phlebotomist plays a crucial role in supporting laboratory operations by performing various blood draws, specimen collection, and ensuring proper documentation and storage of samples. This role requires troubleshooting, training, and workflow recommendations to optimize laboratory efficiency while maintaining high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Blood Draws & Specimen Collection: Perform venipunctures and other specimen collections (e.g., urine, fecal) as required. Demonstrate proper technique using straight or butterfly needles.
  • Specimen Handling: Label specimens accurately, centrifuge, split, and freeze as needed according to the test order. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure correct identification.
  • Patient Communication: Explain the blood draw or specimen collection process in a clear, courteous manner to patients.
  • Documentation & Records: Update patient information and maintain accurate records of specimens collected. Ensure 100% accuracy in test requisitions and labeling.
  • Specimen Storage & Transport: Store specimens at required temperatures, place samples in appropriate collection containers, and prepare them for transport while maintaining integrity.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Understand and comply with OSHA, DEP, and other regulatory requirements. Attend annual training sessions as required.
  • General Administrative Duties: Answer telephone calls, respond to inquiries, and read laboratory results to provide information to those who request it.

Required Qualifications:
  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (if required by state law).
  • Minimum of 6 months' experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2-4 years of experience in a phlebotomy role, preferably in a clinical or hospital setting.

Certifications:
  • Phlebotomy Certification (required by the state).
