Phlebotomy Technicians are integral members of the medical laboratory team whose primary function is the collection of blood samples from patients. Phlebotomy Technicians also facilitate the collection and transportation of other laboratory specimens (e.g. urine). Very often the patient's only contact with the medical laboratory is with the Phlebotomy Technician. Many patients, from children and teens to adults, often find needles and the idea of having their blood drawn frightening. It takes a skilled Phlebotomy Technician to put the patient at ease while obtaining all the required specimens. A caregiver in this position works 7:00am - 5:00pm. This position would float to Cleveland locations as well as Columbus and Youngstown on occasion.A caregiver who excels in this role will: Perform blood collection procedures, follow venipuncture procedures and maintain appropriate log sheets. Verify order requests and identify information prior to drawing blood or collecting the specimen/kit. Label all specimens collected and deliver them to the appropriate processing area. Perform specimen processing and send out tasks, including accessioning, centrifugation and packaging. Pick up and deliver blood, other sample types and lab supplies. Travel to various locations within the enterprise. Complete and submit appropriate administrative paperwork and log sheets, such as time and mileage reports. Be flexible to work at assigned locations and hours that are in need of coverage. Location may vary daily and be determined with minimal notice. Follow proper laboratory safety procedures. Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: High school diploma or GED. One year of current phlebotomy experience. Experienced and proficient in blood collection from all patient populations. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) upon hire or within six months of employment. Current, valid driver's license. Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: Graduation certificate from a formal accredited phlebotomy program. Phlebotomy certification.
