Job Description
The Dallas Morning News has an immediate opening for an audience fellow. During the 12-week program at our downtown Dallas office, the fellow will work directly with the Audience Team to creatively promote our journalism.
What to expect from this experience:
You'll join a team of strong journalists whose mission is to build trust in our community. We focus on identifying new audiences, engaging with readers, listening to our community and collaborating to create impactful and indispensable journalism. We approach conversations with readers in the same manner we interact with our colleagues, with respect and an eye for understanding what is most important to them. A typical day during this fellowship might include anything from creating social videos with our podcasting teams to building out the evening newsletter to tabling in the community.
What we're looking for in you: Candidates must have strong writing and editing skills, plus an excellent understanding of internet culture and the digital space. The fellow will be expected to write digital headlines and
create multimedia elements for social, including short-form video and engagement callouts. We're looking for someone with a working knowledge of SEO and digital best practices, who can work on tight deadlines in fast-moving breaking news situations.
Other ways our team supports our journalism:
• managing the dallasnews.com home page
• monitoring real-time analytics and making decisions based on that information
• coaching and training journalists in our newsroom on audience best practices
• improving and testing headlines
• sending newsletter alerts
• collaborating with reporters and editors for enterprise story promotion plans
Our newsroom prioritizes mentorship and training. Fellows will have full access to The News' weekly summer intern training sessions and access to a mentor.
Applications should include links to relevant work on websites, blogs or social media, or in print. A cover letter and résumé with references are required with all applications. The position is available to Mizzou students who are May graduates or current masters students.
Job Requirements
Applicants must be enrolled in college and working toward a degree (associate's, bachelor's, master's or doctorate) or they may have graduated within six months prior to the internship start date.
Applicants should send no more than eight published clips or links. Clips may be reduced but must be legible.
The clips or links should focus on the specific position the applicant desires, but materials showing a variety of reporting and writing abilities are acceptable.
A cover letter and résumé with references are required with all applications.
