Responsibilities:
- Phlebotomy
- Uses proper patient identification and specimen labeling procedures according to Laboratory policy.
- Successfully obtains blood from all age groups using venipuncture, finger stick and heel stick techniques.
- Successfully performs drug screens and PKU collections.
- Keeps phlebotomy area clean and adequately stocked with phlebotomy supplies at all times.
- Accessioning and receiving Specimens
- Accurately and timely receives specimens into the laboratory.
- Accurately creates and receives batches.
- Performs rounding to wards for urine and culture collection.
- Investigates and documents problems with unacceptable specimens.
- Customer Service
- Uses AIDET principles when performing phlebotomy and Demonstrates concerns for patient comfort and privacy.
- Uses Patient/Family center values and conducts all activities with respect for the rights and wishes of patients,visitors and patient families.
- Uses appropriate phone etiquette and is considerate, helpful and courteous to all internal and external customers.
- Tries to resolve customer complaints at the initial phone call.

- Interacts professionally with all members of the hospital staff.

- Utilizes appropriate channels of communication reguarding patient care issues and staff problems.

- Problem solving
- Reviews patient vouchers and registrations for accuracy and corrects them as indicated.
- Immediately notifies supervisor or designee when unable to resolve a problem.
- Assists in tracking lost/misplaced specimens.
- Follows appropriate down time procedures.
- Investigates and documents problems with unacceptable specimens
- Accurately orders tests in the hospital and laboratory computer systems.
- Instructs patients in proper collection of samples for specific purposes (Sterile urine collection, drug screens including Chain of Custody, etc).
- Prepares and distributes laboratory reports.
- Maintains proper specimen integrity.
- Regulation Compliance
- Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety.
- Complies with established safety policies for chemical handling, storage and disposal.
- Operates equipment and performs all procedures in a safe manner as instructed.
- Ensure a safe work environment by complying with established procedures.
- Other duties
- Responsible for cleanliness of courier vehicle if applicable.
- Maintains outreach specimen collection logs if applicable.
- Assists the courier in specimen pick up when needed.
- Accurately registers patients into the hospital computer system.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION
High school graduate or GED.
EXPERIENCE
Prior experience in phlebotomy.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Ability to interact professionally with patients, visitors, physicians, and members of other Hospital Departments. Excellent customer service skills Basic knowledge of anatomy/physiology. Ability to work independently.
LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION
Certified or certified eligible with National Phlebotomy Association preferred.
Must have a current driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
