The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties is seeking a Custodian I to join our team!

As a Custodian I, you will create and maintain a safe, clean, and sanitary facility for all members to enjoy. If hired for this position, you will follow all instructions on equipment use, chemicals, and scheduling to facilitate enjoyment at the YMCA for all members and staff alike.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Interior cleaning including, but not limited to, vacuuming carpets, cleaning windows, cleaning spills, sweeping or mopping floors, removing scuff marks from walls and floors, cleaning bathrooms and locker rooms, gum removal, dusting, odor control, and trash removal.
  • Replace soap, towels, and other supplies.
  • Assist other departments and branches as needed for ongoing or special events.
  • Record and report all needed repairs and additional cleaning needs on assignment list. Report to supervisor conditions that require an immediate response. Repair and clean as directed.
  • Ensure YMCA building and property is secure during shift and report incidents and hazardous conditions to supervisor.
  • Operate all equipment in a safe and proper manner.
  • Use proper techniques and procedures and maintain a clean work area to ensure safe working practices and environment.

Wage: $16.80 to $18.80 per hour, depending on qualifications

Hours: Part-Time, Up to 25 hours per week

Location: Morgan Family YMCA, Tacoma, WA

Custodian Job Description

Position Summary

The Custodian performs custodial duties required to maintain a clean, safe and welcoming environment of the YMCA location. Assists the facilities director in supervising custodians. Provides a quality experience to members focused on YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

Key Responsibilities
•Interior cleaning including, but not limited to, vacuuming carpets, cleaning windows, cleaning spills, sweeping, or mopping floors, removing scuff marks from walls and floors, cleaning bathrooms and locker rooms, gum removal, dusting, odor control, and trash removal in accordance with established SOPs.
•Empty outdoor trash cans, pick-up trash and debris on Y grounds, sweep walkways and entrances in accordance with established SOPs.
•Safely operate, maintain and store custodial motorized and non-motorized equipment (to include not limited to auto-scrubber, side-by-side, Imop, CS-16, sweeper-vac, high-vac equipment, etc.). Notify Facilities Director immediately of damage, issues or repairs needed.
•Fill and/or replace soap, hand sanitizer, towels, and other supplies.
•Upon receiving notice of custodial or facilities complaints or areas of need, immediately notify the Facilities Director.
•Ensure the custodial closets and carts are appropriately stocked, organized, clean and safe.
•Adhere to all safety and chemical protocols and procedures. Stop work and immediately report accidents, incidents and hazards accordingly.
•Use proper techniques and procedures and maintain a clean work area to ensure safe work environment and practices, including the use of PPE.
•Understand, review and manage SDS labels, binders and sheets.
•During center operational hours, ensure YMCA exterior doors, storage closets are locked and secure. Outside of business hours, ensure the YMCA buildings and property are always secure and locked.
•Meet performance measurement by telling the Y story and raising charitable dollars to fulfill our mission.
•Assist the staff leadership team in reaching campaign goals through recruiting campaigners, making personal asks, and supporting branch events.
•Embraces and actively promotes an inclusive and equitable work environment.
•Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities
•Minimum 18 years of age.
•6 months of prior custodial, janitorial or related experience is preferred.
•Understanding cleaning compounds and chemicals and their safe, efficient use.
•Positive attitude and previous experience working with diverse populations.
•Complete online Child Abuse Prevention training on first day. Complete other online and in-person training as required.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands
  • Constantly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently required to perform reaching, crouching, kneeling, carrying, working in narrow spaces.
  • Must frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move a higher amount.
  • Must be able to erect and stand on ladders and platforms at heights up to 12 feet.
  • Work with cleaning chemicals, chemical compounds, solvents, and solutions in dry, liquid, powder, spray, and aerosol forms.
  • Regularly work in conditions that will create dirt and dust.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
