PLEASE NOTE - This position may require temporary relocation to other TONHC Facilities: Sells Hospital, Santa Rosa Health Center, San Simon Health Center, and San Xavier Health Center.

Position Summary:

The purpose of the position is to augment the regular laboratory workforce by allocating some of the more routine duties of the medical laboratory technologist and technician to this position (e.g., drawing blood).

Scope of Work:

This position is located within TONHC on the Tohono O'odham Nation. The incumbent will perform miscellaneous tasks, including phlebotomy, transporting patients, clerical, and "order entry" duties. The incumbent obtains test results for use by the primary care provider, initiating CPR when indicated, answering telephones, and directing telephone calls; observing safety practices for the benefit of patients, staff, and visitors; cleaning, and following isolation procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Depending on the area of assignment, an incumbent may not be required to perform some of the duties listed below):

  • Performs a range of diagnostic support duties that include age-specific patient assessment to draw blood specimens from inpatient and outpatient patients.
  • Ensures that blood samples drawn are in the proper tube, labeled correctly, and properly identified.
  • Makes gross and subtle visual observations of the patient's condition, taking all necessary precautions against infection and adverse reactions of patients.
  • Provide education to patients on specimen collection procedures.
  • Perform finger sticks for lab studies utilizing appropriate aseptic techniques.
  • Performs venipuncture to obtain lab specimens according to provider orders on an assigned basis utilizing the appropriate aseptic technique.
  • Correctly labels specimens with the time and the place obtained. Delivers the samples to the laboratory using the appropriate accessioning procedure.
  • Safely transports multiple specimens to the laboratory according to medical center policy.
  • Properly identifies the patient. Remains with the patient until they can leave either to the clinic or to their final destination.
  • Performs patient transport duties, including transferring the patient to and from a wheelchair or stretcher from the department or other areas of the hospital or clinic.
  • Answers the phone and directs calls to the appropriate individual. Takes complete messages and promptly delivers to appropriate personnel-contacts other disciplines and services as required.
  • Cleans areas within the department and restocks needed supplies at appropriate levels. Routinely orders proper supplies from warehouse
  • Completes and assures that the appropriate documentation captures the workload.
  • Perform "order entry" duties from provider test order requisition.
  • Participates in maintaining a clean, safe environment. Removes defective equipment, reports hazards, observes- safety regulations, adheres to infection control policies, and utilizes proper aseptic techniques to perform duties.
  • Attends planned in-service programs, including fire and safety training and CPR certification training as directed.
  • Contributes to team effort and other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, Public Law 104-191 (HIPAA).
  • Knowledge of the Privacy Act of 1974 mandates the incumbent to maintain the confidentiality of all administrative, medical, and personnel records.
  • Knowledge of first aid procedures and the ability to recognize adverse patient reactions.
  • Knowledge and skills are sufficient to correctly identify and obtain equipment and supplies and communicate proper use with patients, family members, and staff.
  • Skill to properly collect blood specimens using a variety of collection procedures and aids. Knowledge of specialized and appropriate specimen tube requirements and preservation requirements to maintain specimen integrity before testing.
  • Ability to take various samples such as sputum or urine samples, seal samples for analysis by others, conduct the age-specific patient assessment, and record results; this typically includes explaining the patient's role in the procedure to the patient.
  • Ability to perform clerical duties, including typing and advanced functions with various types of software to comply with multiple medical centers' initiatives, including regulatory compliance and accreditation requirements.
  • Ability to perform "order entry" duties from the "provider test order requisition" module.
  • The incumbent must exercise considerable skill and tact in dealing with patients and be sensitive to their needs.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma.
  • One year of work experience in the medical, health, or a related field; or completed one year of study in medical, health, or a related field.
Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:
  • Must complete the medical center training program in "Order Entry."
  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and a National FBI fingerprint check are required to determine suitability for employment, including a 39-month driving record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham language and English as a condition of employment.
