Job Summary:

The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood samples and other specimens with precision and care, ensuring minimal discomfort to patients.

They play a critical role in maintaining high-quality care by accurately performing blood draws, labeling specimens, and preparing samples for laboratory testing.

Their expertise in phlebotomy, along with their ability to put patients at ease, directly contributes to the success of the healthcare team and ensures reliable test results for patients and our partners.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform Blood Draws: Conduct venipunctures (blood draws) using straight or butterfly needles, ensuring proper technique and patient comfort.
  • Specimen Preparation: Label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to established procedures to maintain the integrity of samples.
  • Specimen Collection and Storage: Collect and store specimens, such as blood, urine, and fecal samples, following the correct protocols. Ensure all specimens are properly labeled and stored at the required temperature.
  • Patient Interaction: Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients in a clear and courteous manner, helping to ease any concerns.
  • Ensure Accuracy: Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes, check labels for accuracy, and ensure all documentation is correct before processing samples.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of specimen collection, processing, and storage, including any relevant maintenance or decontamination data.
  • Compliance: Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, including proper disposal of biohazard materials and maintaining a clean, safe work environment.
  • Collaboration: Communicate effectively with laboratory staff, nurses, and physicians to ensure accurate testing and specimen handling.
  • Customer Service: Answer patient inquiries and provide assistance regarding specimen collection or test results as needed.
  • Training: Participate in annual department training to stay updated on best practices, regulatory requirements, and advancements in phlebotomy techniques.


Required Qualifications:
  • Previous experience in phlebotomy, including performing blood draws, labeling specimens, and specimen preparation.
  • Strong knowledge of venipuncture techniques, including the use of straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Understanding of laboratory procedures, including centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens as required.
  • Familiarity with proper specimen storage and transport protocols to ensure specimen integrity.
  • Ability to follow detailed protocols and maintain accurate records.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to put patients at ease during specimen collection.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy in labeling, documentation, and specimen handling.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations related to phlebotomy and biohazard safety.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certification in Phlebotomy (e.g., Certified Phlebotomy Technician, CPT).
  • Experience with laboratory equipment and specimen management systems.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory requisitions.
  • Previous experience in a healthcare or laboratory setting.


Certifications:
  • Certification in Phlebotomy (preferred but not required).
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification (if applicable).


Additional Requirements:
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
  • Strong communication skills to interact with patients, laboratory staff, and healthcare providers.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks such as standing for long periods, lifting, and moving specimens.
  • Must attend and complete annual department training.
