Collects, sorts, processes, and stores hazardous waste and recyclables and assists the public with the proper disposal and recycling of materials.

Job Responsibilities
- Collects, sorts, tests, and processes unknown chemicals and hazardous waste materials to determine classification, appropriate disposal, storage, and shipment methods.
- Assists the public with the disposal and proper recycling of electronic waste and batteries according to local and state regulations.
- Coordinates with hazardous waste recyclers on pickup times and ensures hazardous waste manifests for recycling are complete and correct.
- Manages various recycling programs, such as mattresses, textiles, and books, and coordinates with scalehouse staff on all hazardous waste counts/recycling tickets to ensure correct charges are made.
- Maintains state compliance for primary and secondary containment systems.
- Operates various types of machinery including, but not limited to, forklift, and skid steer, to move hazardous materials and containers.
- Supports the relationship between Pitkin County government and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and County staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and County information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
Education and Experience:

Required Licenses or Certifications:
- Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Colorado Driver's License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
- Must possess or be able to obtain 40-Hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) and HAZWOPER Site Supervisor certification within six months of hire.
- County policies and procedures.

- Record keeping and records management rules and standards.
- Applying governing rules and regulations.
- Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, under pressure, and in emergency and stressful situations.
- Interacting with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.

- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers and other regional agencies.
- Utilizing standard personal computer software programs and specialized State and County software.
- Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
- Work is performed outdoors with exposure to various temperatures and weather conditions and requires exposure to potentially dangerous equipment, chemicals, and some hazardous substances.
- Work is performed near active traffic.
