Hiring Range Description: The hiring range is the starting point of the pay range to the 4th quartile of the pay range. Starting pay will be determined based on qualifications and experience.

Job Summary

Collects, sorts, processes, and stores hazardous waste and recyclables and assists the public with the proper disposal and recycling of materials.

Must be able to work on Saturdays.
Job Responsibilities

  • Collects, sorts, tests, and processes unknown chemicals and hazardous waste materials to determine classification, appropriate disposal, storage, and shipment methods.
  • Assists the public with the disposal and proper recycling of electronic waste and batteries according to local and state regulations.
  • Coordinates with hazardous waste recyclers on pickup times and ensures hazardous waste manifests for recycling are complete and correct.
  • Manages various recycling programs, such as mattresses, textiles, and books, and coordinates with scalehouse staff on all hazardous waste counts/recycling tickets to ensure correct charges are made.
  • Maintains state compliance for primary and secondary containment systems.
  • Operates various types of machinery including, but not limited to, forklift, and skid steer, to move hazardous materials and containers.
  • Supports the relationship between Pitkin County government and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and County staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and County information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND five years of experience operating and maintaining heavy equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Applicants must also meet area-specific experience as noted above.

Required Licenses or Certifications:
  • Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Colorado Driver's License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain 40-Hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) and HAZWOPER Site Supervisor certification within six months of hire.
Knowledge Of:
  • County policies and procedures.
  • State and federal laws and regulations governing work performed.
  • Record keeping and records management rules and standards.

  • Applying governing rules and regulations.
  • Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, under pressure, and in emergency and stressful situations.
  • Interacting with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers and other regional agencies.
  • Utilizing standard personal computer software programs and specialized State and County software.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
Physical Demands and Working Environment
  • Work is performed outdoors with exposure to various temperatures and weather conditions and requires exposure to potentially dangerous equipment, chemicals, and some hazardous substances.
  • Work is performed near active traffic.
