Description

Skilled work in the operation of street sweeper and the manual and semi-automated operation of refuse collection and disposal equipment on assigned routes. The position involves safely and efficiently operating the equipment on prescribed daily routes, which may be performed at hours of minimal traffic. Work is performed under the general supervision and is reviewed through periodic inspections by the Manager, Solid Waste and Sanitation.

Examples of Duties

  • Responsible for daily pre-trip inspection and truck/sweeper maintenance requirements, performs light maintenance such as checking and adding fuel, water and oil, checking brakes, checking lights, changing tires and sweeper brooms. Responsible for daily vehicle cleaning (inside and outside) and deodorizing.
  • Reports all vehicle defects to the appropriate Fleet Operations personnel. Follows up with Manager or Foreman on the status of repairs or uncorrected conditions.
  • Drives rear-loading refuse trucks on residential routes, and discharges refuse at landfill or transfer station. Empties truck at prescribed designation in accordance with regulations.
  • Responsible for the safety, performance and conduct of the Collectors on the vehicle. Ensures collectors are consistently wearing high visibility safety clothing or vests. Assists in training of Collectors in use of rear-loader trucks. Ensures that collectors in his crew comply with City rules regarding safety and handling of containers.
  • Operates street sweeper; sweeps streets and parking lots. Maintains routine routes and schedules.
  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of all residential collection and sweeper routes.
  • Uses green tags to notify homeowners of improper set-outs and returns bottom half to supervisor for documentation.
  • Inspects residential and commercial carts for compliance with City specifications.
  • Notifies Manager or Foreman of situations requiring attention on his route, i.e., water leaks, low hanging limbs or wires, illegally parked vehicles, suspicious activity or persons.
  • Fills out daily reports accurately and legibly. Subject to overtime work assignments and responds to job-related emergencies as required.
  • Assists other drivers daily as necessary to ensure timely completion of all routes. Assists in training other operators in the proper use of sweepers and heavy equipment.
  • Does related work as required.

Typical Qualifications

High school diploma required, and one (1) year experience in the operation of commercial refuge vehicles, is preferred. Driver's License Requirement: Valid Florida Driver's License Classification: B or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire. Must have temporary permit before hire date.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly required to communicate and exchange information with others. This position is semi-active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crouching as needed throughout the day. The employee must frequently lift or move items up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift or move items up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

In addtion, the City offers 2 weeks of vacation and 2 weeks of sick leave, which accrues bi-weekly from your first day of work.

Furthermore, the City pays out accrued leave at 100% for non-probationary employees. While there are limits on the vacation leave paid, it is at a minimum of 480 hours and there is no limit on the sick leave paid out. The City also offers an option for employees to cash out up to 2 weeks of sick leave, twice per year (per policy)

Supplemental insurance such as accident, cancer, hospital, etc. is also available.

In addtion, positions with the City are eligible for student loan forgiveness.
