Position Overview:
A Certified Sports Referee is responsible for officiating and ensuring that sports events are conducted according to the established rules and regulations. Their primary duties include monitoring the game, enforcing the rules, making calls regarding fouls and penalties, and ensuring player safety. They maintain fairness, resolve disputes between players and coaches, and are often tasked with providing clear explanations for their decisions when necessary.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Officiating Games: Oversee and officiate sports events, ensuring that all rules are followed and players are held accountable.
  • Rule Enforcement: Make decisions based on the rules of the game, including calling fouls, penalties, or violations.
  • Conflict Resolution: Resolve disputes or conflicts on the field between players, coaches, and other officials.
  • Maintain Safety: Ensure player safety by assessing the game environment and making calls that minimize risk of injury.
  • Communication: Communicate with other referees and coaches, often explaining rulings and ensuring smooth event progression.
  • Record Keeping: Document scores, penalties, and other game-specific details for reporting or future reference.
  • Continuing Education: Stay updated on rule changes and maintain certification by attending training and passing relevant tests.

Additional Responsibilities     

Fulfill any other duties as assigned by the supervisor, recognizing that the role may evolve to include new tasks introduced by the company.

Job Qualifications    

Minimum Experience/Education

  • Ability to travel to various schools sites within Stockton Unified School District 

Minimum Requirements     

  • Must be at least 18 years of age     
  • Must have at least 48 semester college units or successful completion of the Paraeducator exam     
  • TB test clearance     
  • Must pass DOJ/FBI criminal background check     
  • Must be punctual and reliable     
  • Must have experience working with youth and general knowledge base of core elementary subjects.    

License/Certification/Clearance     

  • Sexual Harassment Training Certificate *required     
  • Mandated Reporter Training Certificate *required     
  • First aid and CPR Certification *preferred
  • Sports Official Certification *preferred   

Physical Demands      

  • Must have sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to safely supervise children’s activities including the ability to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.     
  • Must be fit for frequent bending and standing.
