Job Summary

Ariadne Labs is seeking a Chief Operating Officer (COO) to be part of the three-person executive team that will lead the organization at this pivotal time in its history. Reporting to the Executive Director and partnering with the Deputy Director (DD), the COO will drive administration and operations to support Ariadne's continued evolution from start-up to established and deeply impactful health systems innovator. The COO will lead and oversee a team responsible for sound finances, talent management, operations, and its design and scientific platforms, enabling growth to increase current revenues and improve efficiency over the next three years. They will serve as a strategic thought partner to the Executive Director and the DD, as they jointly bring Ariadne into its next phase of designing, testing, and supporting the spread of healthcare innovations for patients at their most critical moments.

The Organization

Founded in 2012, Ariadne Labs is a joint center for health systems innovation at Brigham & Women's Hospital (BWH) and the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health (HSPH). Its mission is research and discovery to drive scalable solutions for better care at the most critical moments in people's lives everywhere. Ariadne's work is achieving massive impact across millions of lives touched nationally and internationally, and it has grown rapidly as a result--from 15 staff and researchers in 2012 to 112 today, with a budget of $27 million, working on 30 projects across 26 countries, to design, test, and spread innovations that measurably produce and scale better healthcare across numerous clinical areas particularly childbirth, surgical care, primary care, and at the end of life.

The Role

The COO will report to the Executive Director and has overall responsibility to manage capacity needs and internal workflows to achieve our programmatic, operational and financial goals in a manner that advances the organization's mission, vision, and values. They have full leadership and supervisory responsibility for: the development and execution of Ariadne's financial management strategy; oversight of financial operations (operations and grant accounting, procurement, budget planning and monitoring); and development and execution of a revenue growth strategy (from philanthropic, foundation, government, and private sector sources) including development and management of business partnerships and related contracts. In addition, the COO leads talent strategy, acquisition, and development at all levels of the Lab, and oversees internal operations functions including facilities and IT management. The COO also manages the communications and development teams as well as Ariadne's three platforms - centers of expertise that provide expert guidance and support to every project in the fields of informatics, statistics, implementation science, monitoring and evaluation, quality improvement, strategic communications, and program management. The COO has a core charge to maintain strong and vital relationships with Ariadne's parent institutions (HSPH and BWH) to ensure compliance with their policies and procedures, and will occasionally represent Ariadne Labs to external partners and funders.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

The new COO's first responsibility will be to continue to implement and oversee a culture of effective administrative management and decision-making that fits with an organization in its post-start-up years, including the creation of effective business processes, policies, and systems. They will also work purposefully to define roles and responsibilities and promote thoughtful, responsive decision-making, collaboration and shared accountability, and will partner with the Executive Director and the soon-to-be hired DD in strengthening cohesion across all teams to most effectively share knowledge and expertise to optimize Ariadne's innovation work.
