Position Description

St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a Maintenance Worker for our well established Road & Bridge Division whose headquarters are located in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida.

The St. Johns County Road & Bridge Division is responsible for the maintenance of St. Johns County roads, bridges and drainage systems. This includes but is not limited to roadway and pothole patching, sidewalk construction and replacement, drainage pipe and structure cleaning and replacing, ditch excavating, tree trimming and removal, roadside mowing, etc.

Employees work cooperatively as part of maintenance crews to complete work in a safe and effective manner. Safety is the #1 priority at Road & Bridge. Maintenance Workers have the opportunity for advancement, including a pay increase, upon successfully obtaining a commercial driver's license and maintenance of traffic certification. On-the-job training for these qualifications is offered. The goal at Road & Bridge is to provide a safe and efficient transportation system to ensure the mobility of people, goods and services in St. Johns County.

The newly selected Maintenance Worker will work as a member of a Road & Bridge to complete the work necessary to maintain St. Johns County's roads, bridges and drainage systems.

Examples of Duties

The ideal Maintenance Worker candidate must possess St. Johns County's core values of compassion, innovation, and trustworthiness and must work well in a team environment. Some of the specific tasks include but are not limited to:
  • Uses property safety procedures and utilizes proper safety equipment.
  • Performs manual labor associated with the construction, repair and maintenance of roads, bridges and drainage systems.
  • Sets up appropriate work zones and flags and directs traffic.
  • Operates and maintains power equipment, pumps, saws, compactors, chainsaws, etc.
  • Attends training, administrative, safety and other meetings.
  • Drives crew cab pickup truck, dump truck and other vehicles and equipment.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates for the Maintenance Worker position are encouraged to apply if they meet the following minimum qualifications:
  • Completion of 10th grade education or equivalency required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in similar related work.
  • A valid Florida driver's license or State of Florida Class B Commercial Driver's License necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position are preferred.
  • Incumbent may be designated "Senior Maintenance Worker" and placed at Pay Grade 10, with the following certifications: High School Diploma or equivalency, CDL - B, and Intermediate MOT Certification.
  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others.
  • Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
  • Must be able to operate a computer.
