In order to be considered for this position candidate must be serving permanently in the title of Assistant Civil Engineer, or filed for civil service exam #5015, and provide proof, or be eligible under the 55a program.

The Division of Sidewalk & Inspection Management (SIM) is responsible for maintaining 12,750 miles of sidewalk and more than 185,000 corners throughout the City. The Pedestrian Ramp Program (PRP), a unit within SIM, is committed to providing pedestrian (curb) ramps citywide that meet applicable accessibility laws and guidelines. Pedestrian ramps are a critical component in providing safe and accessible means of travel throughout New York City.


PRP has an exciting opportunity to join a fast-paced, collaborative, innovative team. The selected candidate will be part of PRP's Engineering Team, who is responsible for the design and management of pedestrian ramp projects, design review of other projects, the development of inspection criteria, construction QA/QC, and the tracking of pedestrian curb ramps and ADA compliancy issues within the city right-of-way.


Under the direction and supervision of a licensed professional engineer, the selected candidate will be responsible for the evaluation of existing pedestrian ramps, development of accessible design solutions for pedestrian ramps (involving geometric design and grading), review of projects for compliancy with the Americans with Disabilities Act, coordination with other DOT units, agencies, contractors, consultants, vendors, and the public to successfully implement accessibility requirements, resolve design issues, and answer any accessibility questions that might arise in a project, evaluation of technical infeasibilities, and attend site visits as it relates to pedestrian ramps design and construction.


The selected candidate will also manage pedestrian ramp contracts throughout the project life cycle. In coordination with NYC DDC, the Engineering Team uses technical and project management expertise to ensure that the projects are on time, on budget, and within scope.


Key responsibilities will include:

  1. Overseeing the preparation of the project scope
  2. The initial evaluation and recurring reassessment of the project budget
  3. Monitoring and assessment of project schedules
  4. Identifying and mitigating risks that may impact successful completion of projects

The candidate will perform other related duties as assigned by the Engineering Director, Senior Engineers, and PRP Executive Staff.


Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or

2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a Master's degree from an accredited college in civil engineering.


Preferred Skills

Experience related to roadway reconstruction/construction engineering is preferred. Familiarity with NYC infrastructure projects and Americans with Disabilities Act preferred. Excellent computer and communication skills are desired.
