The House Records committee secretary position requires a very detail-oriented person, as there are many intricate procedures. Accuracy and the willingness to double-check details are critical. Furthermore, committee secretaries often have to change tasks in midstream. After committee secretaries are trained, they basically work independently with minimal direction. Although much work is performed independently, the position requires a team player as there will be times when a committee secretary must help complete minutes for other committees as assigned.

Employees of the House Records Office are subject to the employment policies, rules, and conditions of employment for legislative staff as adopted and amended by the legislature. Under Alaska Statute (AS 24.10.060), during legislative sessions employees must work as many hours as required by their supervisor and are on call seven days a week. It should also be noted that most often employees are required to work on legal holidays during the session. Overtime hours are uncompensated. The regular office hours for the House Records staff are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. However, on frequent occasions, committee secretaries are required to work evenings or weekends, or to come in for early meetings. Legislative Branch employees are subject to the provisions of the Legislative Ethics Act. This law and associated rules create some restrictions on our employees that may not necessarily be placed on other state employees. One should be aware that beyond the legal remedies for noncompliance, it is a condition of employment to comply with the Act. Minimum Qualifications
