What You'll Do

As the Vice President of Engineering, you will lead the development and implementation of scalable, high-performance digital services software products designed to optimize user engagement and experience while meeting public sector agency requirements. Your role will encompass strategic planning, team leadership, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure the delivery of impactful, user-centered solutions.

You will be responsible for shaping technical strategies, setting product roadmaps, mentoring engineering leaders, and building strong relationships with clients and business partners. Additionally, you will oversee project progress, manage budgets, and deliver regular updates to the executive team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Live and breathe a DevOps culture, managing talented digital services product development teams.
  • Lead, mentor, and inspire a high-performing engineering team, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead technical challenges that are part of customer agency bid and proposal determination and qualification efforts.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including product, design, and editorial, to align engineering efforts with business goals and exceed user needs.
  • Drive the implementation of best-practice-based development, testing, user feedback loops, and other methodologies, using data to continuously inform and optimize user and stakeholder engagement.
  • Design and implement best practices in software development, testing, and deployment in partnership with teams across the organization.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends, integrating relevant advancements into the company's technology stack.
  • Oversee project timelines, resource allocation, and budget management to ensure timely and efficient delivery of engineering initiatives.
  • Implement agile methodologies and frameworks to streamline development processes and enhance team productivity.
  • Monitor project progress, identify potential risks, and implement mitigation strategies to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Develop and execute strategies to attract, hire, and retain top engineering talent.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning and professional development, providing opportunities for team members to grow and excel in their roles.

Requirements

  • BS, MS, MBA, or Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related technical discipline.
  • Strong competency with modern agile software methodologies and systems (e.g., Scrum, Kanban) and planning tools (e.g., JIRA).
  • Proven expertise in modern web and mobile languages/frameworks and related front-end technologies (e.g., Ruby, Python, Node.js, Go, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, React, Angular) and a strong understanding of UX principles and best practices.
  • Solid understanding of modern API design patterns (REST, GraphQL, JSON, etc.).
  • Proven track record of driving user engagement through innovative software-development-based engineering solutions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to web accessibility standards and best practices, ensuring inclusive design for all users.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, equally comfortable discussing complex technical concepts with a team or presenting to executive leadership.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate within the team, across stakeholders and partners, and lead through influence.
  • Ability to nurture and develop emerging leaders within the engineering team, fostering a culture of mentorship and professional growth.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Knowledge of design thinking principles to foster innovation.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Experience managing large teams and distributed software development projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret technology and market trends as a foundation for technology and solution roadmaps.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with waterfall, agile/scrum methodologies, and complete application lifecycle management.
  • At least 5 years' experience leading teams utilizing Agile development methodologies.
  • Proven success in establishing key performance indicators, metrics, and focus to drive software development best practices.
  • Advanced negotiation, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills (presentation, written and oral) and the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and management.
