Head of Engineering, Apex Legends - Remote Possible

Reporting into the VP, GM of Apex Legends, we are looking for a Head of Engineering who will provide technical leadership, develop, and align strategies to support our design vision and player experience, and lead quality and continuous improvement across the organization. This Head of Engineering role will be a promoter of growth in developer platforms and life cycles, people management, and collaboration.

You will mentor our studio’s Technical Directors to follow engineering and game development best practices and can coach technical leaders by helping them to find and address risks across Apex Legends development.

Responsibilities

  • You will participate in strategic discussions for the studio as the core representative of Apex Legends Technology group.
  • Set multi-year strategic technical targets and roadmaps for Apex Legends, establishing near-term, mid-term, and long-term milestones.
  • Advocate for change that benefits players, even countering conventional practices that may block those changes.
  • You will manage and promote the architectural roadmap and technical goals, focusing on performance, developer efficiency, and operational excellence.
  • Improve the creation of world-class tools for developers in collaboration with studio discipline leaders and external partners.
  • Measure code quality and workflow efficiency across the studio, and develop plans for improvements.
  • Ensure continuous improvement of engineering practices, tools, and workflows with associated key performance indicators.
  • Collaborate with console manufacturers (e.g., Sony, Microsoft) to influence and share strategic plans, technical roadmaps, and product specifications.
  • Manage risks and develop mitigation plans for the technical strategy.
  • Recruit qualified candidates to grow geographically distributed, virtual engineering teams and provide mentorship to other engineering leaders, promoting their capabilities and technical skills.

Required Qualifications

  • 15+ years of game industry experience with at least 3 product cycles on PC or consoles in a technical management leadership role.
  • Experience working with live operations and understanding the challenges and demands associated with it.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a large technical organization (100+).
  • Navigate relationships within a complex organizational structure and establish credibility.
  • Skill in organizational design and effectiveness, including the establishment of technical career tracks and succession planning.
  • Technical expertise and understanding of game development and proprietary engines.
  • Track record in addressing technical debt and implementing rules and processes to improve software quality and efficiency.
  • Empathy with the ability to understand and support the needs of team members when providing direction and allocating resources.
  • Deliver complex technical concepts and strategies to both technical and non-technical audiences.

US Compensation and Benefits

The base salary ranges listed below are for the defined geographic market pay zones in these states. If you reside outside of these locations, a recruiter will advise on the base salary range and benefits for your specific location.

Salary offered will be determined based on numerous relevant business and candidate factors including, for example, education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, and business or organizational needs.

Base Salary Ranges

  • California (depending on location e.g. Los Angeles vs. Sacramento): $241,250 - $342,400
  • Washington (depending on location e.g. Seattle vs. Spokane): $214,950 - $331,200
  • New York (depending on location e.g. Manhattan vs. Buffalo): $214,950 - $342,400
  • Jersey City, NJ: $258,800 - $342,400
  • Colorado (depending on location e.g. Denver vs. Colorado Springs): $214,950 - $314,350

Base salary is just one part of the overall compensation at EA. We also offer a package of benefits including paid time off (3 weeks per year to start), 80 hours per year of sick time, 16 paid company holidays per year, 10 weeks paid time off to bond with baby, medical/dental/vision insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, and 401(k) to regular full-time employees. Certain roles may also be eligible for bonus and equity.
