Senior Mechanical Engineer

Caladan Bio, Brooklyn, New York, United States

Caladan Bio is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to play a key role in designing, prototyping, and refining Caladan Bio’s products. You’ll own critical subsystems and drive full system integration and testing. You will operate as a “full-stack” mechanical engineer, contributing to every stage of the product development process. This includes concept development, CAD design, prototyping, design for manufacturing (DFM), creating technical drawings, managing relationships with contract manufacturers, and conducting performance and reliability testing. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to have a lot of ownership over their work, working with a small group of highly motivated individuals in a fast paced startup environment. Caladan Bio is a startup based in Brooklyn NY that is building next generation benchtop bioreactor systems. Caladan is backed by venture firms Twelve Below, Lerer Hippeau, Collaborative Fund and Wireframe VC. Caladan’s mission is to enable industrial biology companies to scale up bio-based products by arming them with high-throughput bioreactors, designed to increase the amount of benchtop experiments they can run, getting their products to market faster. If successful, every bio-based product in the world will go through a Caladan system during development. What You’ll Do Serve as a Senior Mechanical Engineer on cross-functional project teams to develop world-class bioreactor systems and associated products. Lead projects and provide systems-level oversight, balancing requirements, resolving complex mechanical design issues, and committing to the highest product quality. Create intellectual property by brainstorming novel concepts, writing invention disclosures, and creating rapid prototypes. Create product functional and design specifications and drawings; analyze and test product designs and components. Help develop initial fixtures and assembly processes in collaboration with contract manufacturing team(s); develop and collaborate on verification testing. Provide mechanical engineering support for resolution of manufacturing and field issues, potentially traveling to customer locations. Support production of final product by troubleshooting process and component problems, managing retrofits and system rework to improve performance with rapid turnaround time. Investigate and determine the root cause of quality, manufacturing, or material defects. What You’ll Bring Ability to work onsite in our Brooklyn, NY headquarters. 5 years mechanical design engineering experience for electromechanical devices. BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience. Expert in managing large CAD assemblies in Solidworks or Onshape, knowledge of PDM and PLM systems Familiarity with all phases of the product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debugging, verification, qualification, and manufacturing. Demonstrated knowledge of component manufacturing processes such as CNC, injection molding, sheet metal, surface finishing. Ability to optimize for low and high volume manufacturing. Strong understanding of component selection criteria, and design for reliability and manufacturability.
