Job Title : Principal Electrical Engineer Company Overview Familiar Machines & Magic is a well-funded, new embodied AI and robotics startup based outside of Boston. Our founding team is Colin Angle (founder and former CEO of iRobot), Ira Renfrew (former CPO of Outrider), and Chris Jones (former CTO of iRobot). We are pioneering an exciting new category of home robot in the health and wellness space. Embodied and agentic AI are central enablers to our product vision. Role Description: We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Principal Electrical Engineer to spearhead the development and delivery of consumer robotics hardware and guide its evolution into production-grade systems. This role demands a unique blend of technical expertise, problem-solving creativity, and leadership to design cutting-edge electrical systems for robotic and consumer product applications. Key Responsibilities : Lead all electrical engineering efforts for hardware development, including electrical system architecture design, prototype integration and deployment into production. Collaborate across disciplines to design, prototype, and deliver innovative solutions that meet performance, power efficiency, and reliability goals. Oversee the design and implementation of motor controllers for precise motion control and high-performance robotics applications. Select, integrate, and optimize sensors (e.g., cameras, LiDAR, IMUs) and actuators critical to robotic functionality. Design and analyze complex circuits, including power electronics, signal processing, and communication systems. Lead PCB design and manufacturing efforts to ensure reliability, ease of assembly, and alignment with production goals. Design and optimize power management systems, battery systems, and energy-efficient solutions. Ensure designs meet consumer-grade standards for durability, usability, and cost optimization. Develop embedded systems and firmware for hardware operation, real-time processing, and seamless integration with robotics systems. Develop and refine advanced robot control systems, including PID, state-space control, and adaptive algorithms. Preferred Qualifications : 10 Years experience, preferably with robotic or consumer hardware products from concept to production. Strong project management and cross-functional collaboration skills Demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills in a fast paced environment Hands on experience designing and fabricating hardware Familiarity with industry standards and certification processes for consumer electronics.
