The Vertex Internship Program offers students the opportunity to learn about the pharmaceutical industry from a hands-on perspective. Job Summary:
Engineering & Material Sciences is a multi-disciplinary group focused on the understanding of fundamental engineering and material science issues that underlie drug substance and drug product process design, development, scale-up, and solid form selection. Aligning with the department remit, this intern position will focus on conducting experimental laboratory work aimed at understanding impurity formation during drug substance processing. This intern position is designed to expose the student to real-world pharmaceutical development issues while expecting the student to bring a strong experimental skillset and to rapidly adapt to emerging data.
Key Responsibilities:
Day-to-day job responsibilities include:
Reading relevant literature to implement existing tools and create new solutions based on existing knowledge
Perform laboratory experiments aimed at understanding the kinetics of impurity formation using general and specialized drug substance processing equipment
Learn and use modern analytical tools such as HPLC, NMR, FTIR, etc.
Analyze the resulting data, draw conclusions, and present the accumulated knowledge to peers and senior scientists and engineers
Qualifications:
- Candidate should be enrolled in a graduate-level degree program leading to a ( MS or PhD) in chemical engineering or organic chemistry
- Candidate should have 2 years of lab and research experience
- Candidate should have performed laboratory scale experiments before and have a good understanding of analytical techniques such as HPLC or Process Analytical Technology.
- Permanent legal authorization to work in the United States
- Candidate must be enrolled in an advanced degree program if graduating before May 2025
- Candidate must be available to work full-time, 40 hours per week from May - August 2025
During the internship the student will be expected to understand the assignments and perform the responsibilities listed above. Per student's interest and progress, the scope of the project may be expanded to include process model development. The deliverables are creating the necessary experimental dataset and presenting it with the conclusions drawn from the learnings and data. The student is accountable for completing training, expressing original ideas, giving and receiving feedback, understanding company's culture, brainstorming, being able to work independently after the first couple weeks, completing the tasks and presentations
