Laser Welding Manufacturing Engineer, Tabless Development

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Senior Engineer to develop, engineer and innovate new processes and high-volume automation equipment within the Laser Welding cell manufacturing engineering team. Specifically, this engineer is expected to be or become a process and equipment expert in the field of discrete-step high volume cell manufacturing automation equipment and laser welding applications, including work in prototype stage lab environment and transferring it error free to high volume manufacturing. Other responsibilities would include supporting development and production ramp of highly automated precision jellyroll insertion and laser-based processes including welding/marking and more at component and completed assembly level. The Senior Engineer works closely with Tesla's internal Product Design, Operations, Facilities, Production and Quality Engineering teams and coordinates cross-functional design activities with equipment suppliers to develop scalable innovations in laser weld processes and cell assembly tools to ensure defect free quality product. This individual will also assume ownership of the design and technical transfer of these processes and tools to Tesla Operations, qualifying them for use with the highest standards of safety, quality, and output. This individual would be based in Fremont, CA but would function as a global expert of these systems and some domestic and international travel will be required.

Responsibilities

  • Drive development, installation, qualification and ramp-up of high speed, high precision manufacturing equipment including but not limited to laser welding systems, jellyroll and cell assembly equipment
  • Develop jellyroll insertion and laser weld/marking processes, qualifying them using statistically valid data sets and workflow
  • Team up with internal and external automation houses and equipment suppliers to iterate on and continuously advance state-of-the-art cell manufacturing processes/equipment
  • Generate machine specifications, documentation, and manufacturing instructions
  • Collaborate with Production Engineering, EH&S, Quality, Operations and Design for maximum yield, quality, machine availability and output
  • Optimize product and process flows, improve line and factory level efficiency while reducing Capex and lead-time for iterative manufacturing equipment
Requirements
  • Degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical / Mechatronics Engineering or 5+ years relevant experience
  • Process/Equipment Engineering experience in a high-volume, high-precision manufacturing environment. Experience in battery manufacturing is preferred
  • Experience with SolidWorks or other 3D CAD software, creating/validating layouts, tooling drawings, pneumatic and electrical schematics. Experience with PLC programming is a plus
  • Experience working with advanced precision automation, material handling systems, multi-kilowatt lasers, cell materials and vision systems
  • Experience with design and development of high throughput, automated alignment machinery
  • Strong background in GD&T and mechanical design analysis
  • Strong hands-on experience in a pilot manufacturing and lab scale environment
  • Proven track record of utilizing statistically significant, data driven workflows to solve complex problems

      $80,000 - $174,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits

      Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
