Position Overview: The Staff Development Specialist, Residential (“Specialist”) position provides training based on the needs and resources available, including, but not limited to: classroom style, virtual, on-the-job mentoring, and other training modalities, as necessary. This position directly reports to the Director of Staff Development. Position Requirements: Ability to work: Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, with flexibility to work after hours as needed. Associate’s degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred. Relevant combination of education and experience may be considered. Demonstrated training and group presentation skills are required. Local travel to other Agency locations is required; A current Clean and Valid New York State Driver’s License (actively licensed at least one year). Staff in driving positions must be able to meet agency’s minimum requirements of our insurance policy for authorized drivers; including, but not limited to the minimum age of 21 at time of hire. TCI Trainer certification and experience using TCI strategies and techniques with children who exhibit emotional and behavioral difficulties is highly preferred Current Red Cross CPR/First Aid Instructor certification preferred. Above average proficiency in various computer applications such as: Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Business Workspace Suite (Gmail, Google Docs, Meet, Sheets, etc.); effective Internet skills and secure Internet practices. Experience with learning management systems, a plus. Previous experience working in a human services agency is highly desired. Duties & Responsibilities include: Together with the Director of Staff Development (“Director”), the Associate Executive Director (AED) of Youth in Care, and the Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) Implementation Team, the Staff Development Specialist (“Specialist”) ensures that agency standards and practices for TCI training and refresher training comply with the standards set forth by Cornell University’s TCI training guidelines. Serve as one of the agency’s professional development trainers, providing training in Cornell University’s Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) Core and Updates. Assist with the development and/or facilitation of CPR/First Aid/AED, Medication Administration and other related agency trainings, as assigned. Assist with facilitating completion of program-specific orientation, as necessary, to meet program compliance standards. Working closely with the Residential Program, the Specialist will provide training based on the needs of the program and resources available including, but not limited to: classroom style, virtual, on-the-job mentoring and other training modalities, as necessary. Assist with facilitating additional program-related trainings (i.e. Trauma-informed care, Characteristics of children in our care, such as developmental disabilities, etc.). Ensures agency standards and practices for all trainings comply with the requirements of our governing/ regulatory bodies. This includes, but is not limited to: CPR/First Aid/AED, HIPAA, Medicaid Compliance, Infectious Disease Prevention, Mandated Reporter (both Reporting Child Abuse/Maltreatment and Neglect and the Justice Center Requirements) and the Residential Medication Administration training. With the Director, responsible for maintaining a current record of all completed trainings and those in need of completion in advance of expiration, keeping all staff trainings current so St. Catherine’s remains compliant with the regulations of governing bodies. Collaborate with supervisors and staff to meet training compliance standards for, but not limited to the following: TCI, CPR/First Aid, HIPAA, Medicaid Compliance, Harassment Prevention, Infectious Disease Prevention, Mandated Reporter (both Reporting Child Abuse/ Maltreatment and Neglect and the Justice Center Requirements) and the Residential Medication Administration training. Responsible to assist with monthly notification of training requirement needs to all staff and department heads, ensuring proper communication of training needs is being provided and followed through. Assists Director with development and coordination of an annual training calendar. The calendar is updated semi-annually and includes the necessary training sessions to enable staff to meet their position-specific training requirements, and to improve service delivery to clients. Under the direction of the Director of Staff Development, and under the oversight of the Director of Human Resources, and the Associate Executive Director for Continuous Quality Improvement, ensures that training needs identified through the quality assurance program are addressed. Seeks and maintains fluency of program evidence-based practice initiatives, to the extent that they are well versed and able to provide delivery of agency trainings. Under the direction of the Director, and oversight of the AED of Youth in Care, and the Associate Executive Director for Continuous Quality Improvement, the Specialist will carry out restraint reduction initiatives. The Specialist will role-model approved behavior management and crisis de-escalation strategies for all Agency staff. The Specialist will act as a role model and resource, for direct care staff, regarding TCI, CPR/ First Aid and Medication Administration best practice concepts. Essential Functions: Develop an understanding and maintain knowledge of standards and mandates set by St. Catherine’s Center for Children (St. Catherine’s), the New York State Education Department (SED), the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH), the New York State Office of Child and Family Services (OCFS), the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance Services (OTDA), the Department of Health (DOH), and other regulatory bodies. Demonstrate the capacity to communicate by oral and written means in a clear and concise manner. Articulate public speaking is essential to deliver important content to a variety of employees. Ability to present, demonstrate, assess and constructively critique participants’ knowledge, skills and comprehension or training content. Ability to provide in-person coaching for program staff, both on-the-spot in real time, as well as through individual coaching sessions. Coaching would not only focus on TCI techniques and implementation, but also trauma-informed care and other strategies as woven throughout the Residential Program. Ability to deliver training content based on the audience’s level of knowledge and understanding. Ability to travel to various agency locations to provide necessary training activities, as needed. Competence to remain composed under crisis conditions; Support staff during and following a critical incident. Interacting with a culturally diverse and economically disadvantaged population, is an integral component of the position. This includes a broad range of people with various developmental and functional levels. Excellent communication skills (written/verbal); Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong working relationships with other agency staff.
