Environmental Health Specialist ( Sanitarian ) - Healthy Homes

We are seeking a dedicated Environmental Health Specialist to work full time (35 hours per week) Monday through Friday in our Healthy Homes program. The Environmental Health Specialist works in our community to ensure safe and healthy housing, vector control, the prevention of lead poisoning, and more. EHS-ITs (Environmental Health Specialists In-Training) will work under supervision, progressively moving to independent work as a REHS (Registered Environmental Health Specialist) within two years. REHS roles perform independent inspections, manages compliance, and contribute to public health initiatives. This is an impactful role for professionals committed to enhancing public health through inspections, environmental hazard management, and proactive community engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts housing inspections in accordance with state and local codes. Performs inspections of jail and adult protections inspections. Provides bed bug identification and education.
  • Baits or applies pesticides per state guidelines to prevent vector-borne diseases. Conducts tick identification and education, and investigates animal bites and rabies cases.
  • Performs inspections of tattoo/body art facilities and plan reviews following state regulations to prevent communicable diseases.
  • Under the HUD Lead Hazard Control Grant- collects documents for client applications, conducts lead risk assessments, drafts scopes of work, hosts pre-bid meetings, and performs clearance investigations within HUD guidelines.
  • Conducts public health lead investigations in accordance with state and local codes to prevent child lead poisoning. Monitors the Healthy Homes Lead Poisoning Surveillance System, performs assessments, and follows Ohio Department of Health protocols.
  • Performs lead risk assessments for Section 8 housing and the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours in sciences; valid EHS-IT or REHS credential per Ohio Department of Health requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google products, and technical applications relevant to environmental health.
  • Valid Ohio driver's license, automobile availability, and insurance.
