Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:
Plans, organizes, coordinates and inspects the activities of assigned Electricians and related positions; identifies work needs; and participates in the work of assigned staff.

SUPERVISION:
Receives direction from the Electrical and Electronics Supervisor.
Exercises functional and technical supervision over assigned electricians and related positions.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
•Directs and participates in the work of assigned electricians and related positions.
•Plans, assigns and reviews repairs and upgrades to electrical systems and equipment.
•Prepares work schedules for efficient operation of the electrical shop.
•Estimates costs of repairs and purchases parts.
•Troubleshoots and identifies electrical maintenance repair needs.
•Assists in developing and maintaining an effective preventative maintenance program for all electrical systems and equipment.
•Maintains records involving time, labor and material costs.
•Reports work progress to management.
•Installs and repairs electrical systems including control panels, conduits, switches, fixtures, motors, fire alarm bell and security systems.
•Operates forklifts and aerial personnel lifts.
•May operate or lift equipment once trained and/or licensed to operate equipment.
•Operates district vehicle for work-related travel.
•Keeps vehicles neat and organized and stocked with parts and materials.
•Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION/TRAINING

Four years of increasingly responsible electrical experience including journey level electrical trades work on commercial buildings and/or school facilities.

High school graduation or the equivalent.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATES/REGISTRATIONS (Attime of appointment and during employment)

Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver's license must be presented/available upon acceptance of offer of employment and maintained throughout employment in this class.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is the advanced journey level class in the electrician job family. Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the job family by the responsibility for: providing lead supervision over the electrical shop including the assignment and review of work performed by electrical staff; exercising functional and technical supervision over assigned electricians and related positions; performing the most difficult and responsible electrical repair and maintenance tasks. An incumbent receives direction from the Electrical and Electronics Supervisor. The class of Lead Electrician is distinguished from the Electrical and Electronics Supervisor class in that the latter is a full-time supervisor and has increased responsibility for administrative functions such as budgeting, goal setting, etc.

THE EXAMINATION:
  • The examination process for recruitments may consist of one or any combination of the following: written examination; online examination; performance examination and/or physical agility examination; technical oral examination, scored on a job-related basis; supplemental questionnaire or training and experience evaluation, scored on a job-related basis.
  • Some positions may require fluency in a second language and would require Bilingual Certification.
  • Only qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process. Successful candidates who pass all parts of the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list in order of their relative merit as determined by these competitive examinations.
