About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):

The Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.

About Indiana Department of Environmental Management:

Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.

Role Overview:

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management is seeking an Environmental Engineer Intern to join our agency in summer 2025. The intern will work with engineering staff to achieve compliance with, and enforcement of, state and federal laws, regulations, and standards in various environmental programs, more specifically the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Our program responsibilities are the review of construction applications for public water systems to ensure the construction meets standards and will provide water that is safe in quality, adequate in quality and is suitable for ordinary domestic consumption. We are an environmental and public health program. Safe drinking water is the goal. Candidate will be assisting with public water system construction permit application reviews that require attention to detail and a critical eye. The candidate should posses a willingness to observe, research, and become an active participant in the process. Special projects may be assigned, and candidate ideas will be heard and considered. New perspectives welcome.

Salary Statement:

The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor's degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor's degree or higher by the time the internship starts.

Location:

This position is located in IDEM Offices, Indiana Government Center North, Downtown Indianapolis.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:
  • Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
  • Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
  • Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations
  • Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
  • Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives
  • Assist staff engineers with reviews of construction application plans and specifications of facilities for the issuance of construction permits for public water systems;
  • Become familiar with governing regulations including 327 IAC 8 and the Safe Drinking Water Act;
  • Learn to provide technical expertise and guidance to public water supply systems, consulting engineers, and the public;
  • Assist with education and outreach assistance on compliance requirements, proper operation, and maintenance of the public drinking water system;
  • Prepare supporting documentation for reports for administrative and/or regulatory review;
  • Provide input for developing plans for promoting programs;
  • Learn to interpret rules and regulations governing public drinking water systems;
  • Involvement with public drinking water systems in development of safe drinking water programs;
  • Assist with sampling of water sources designed to determine water quality.
  • Assist with maintaining and developing tracking tools.

What You'll Need for Success:
  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
  • Candidate seeking Baccalaureate degree in engineering
  • Academic work in related field
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline
  • Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels
  • Ability to conduct well-informed research
  • Ability to solve complex, critical problems
  • Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
  • Working knowledge of the sciences including chemistry, environmental sanitation, sanitary engineering, structural design, mathematics, safety engineering and physics;
  • Basic knowledge of the principals and practices of public water system operation treatment and distribution;
  • Ability to review plans and specifications for treatment and control systems;
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, with various governmental levels and with the general public.


Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
