The Carpenter Foreman directs the day-to-day activities of carpenters and laborers and the ongoing decision-making pertaining to project planning and production. The Carpenter Foreman preplans work for a crew, provides training opportunities for craft persons, and oversees safety procedures, quality of workmanship, production costs, and the morale and attitude of the crew. The Carpenter Foreman oversees individual projects including managing the permit and inspection process and attending and conducting regularly scheduled progress meetings.

Scope of Carpenter Foreman Position

Ensures work is compliant with the scope and quality as established by the contract documents. Proactively anticipates and solves problems that could delay construction; promotes and instills TMG's values and principles into the workforce, enforces site cleanliness, safety, and health standards. Successfully manages a subcontractor/craft workforce to meet deadlines, proactively communicates schedules and expectations holds people accountable, and is able to take the necessary initiative to solve difficult challenges or problems on the project.

Essential Functions of Carpenter Foreman Position

Must be physically fit to perform manual labor in all types of environments and conditions, including heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.). Regularly required to stand, must be able to use hands to fingers, handle or feel, and verbally communicate and listen. Other physical requirements include sitting, walking, climbing or balancing, and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling. Specific vision abilities required by the position include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Blue Print reading, layout, and planning of the day-to-day work to perform specific carpentry-related tasks that ascertain that an appropriately sized crew remains productive;
  • Ensuring that all projects are performed in accordance with contractual and quality standards;
  • Establishing and enforcing standards of workmanship that meet the project requirements that are consistent with industry best practices;
  • Working with the crew to accomplish the task, including teaching and mentoring individuals in the crew who are less experienced;
  • Scheduling and directing the daily activities of work and taking necessary action to assure that the project objectives of cleanliness, safety, price, schedule, quality, and process are met;
  • Maintaining tools, cords, and equipment so that they are kept in good working order and are safe for use;
  • Maintaining the work area(s) in a clean and orderly manner on a continuous basis;
  • Maintaining daily paperwork such as timecards, field reports, schedule updates, and E-mail correspondence to keep the various people involved with the project informed of important issues;
  • Coordinating the work with the project superintendent, subcontractors, and others who are involved in the process;
  • Implementing incremental project schedules that make sure upcoming events are on track and are being proactively attended to;
  • Promoting and maintaining a culture that values safety, health and cleanliness;
  • Consistently reporting for work on time and in appropriate attire;
  • Conducting and/or attending pre-construction, progress, and other project and staff meetings;
  • Understanding the sequencing of work;
  • Creating a list of materials, supplies, specialty tools, and equipment (proactively) that are needed to perform the work;
  • Filling out time cards; enforcing work hours, dress codes, and other personnel-related matters;
  • Participating in training and other forms of development to strengthen technical, safety, and supervisory skills;

Minimum Qualifications

  • A.S. degree in construction management or a similar degree with a minimum of 3-5 years of experience or a minimum of 10 years of direct experience without a degree;
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of direct experience and a solid working knowledge of commercial construction (i.e.: concrete formwork, drywall framing, and hanging, etc.);
  • Understands means and methods of construction associated with concrete formwork, drywall framing and hanging, and overall interior building construction;
  • The ability to read blueprints and specifications, create material lists, and fill out time cards and other minor record-keeping tasks;
  • Experience in supervising a direct hire workforce and subcontractors;
  • Extensive knowledge of the trades and the work involved, along with an ability to resolve problems with appropriate and timely decisions.
  • Understand the sequencing of work and the strategy for creating effective project schedules;
  • Understands how to effectively staff self-performed work activities to achieve levels of productivity that meet or exceed industry norms;
  • Interpersonal competencies that include a drive for results, the need for closure, effective oral communication skills, organization, planning, trust, respect and cooperation;
  • OSHA safety training and a current First Aid and CPR certificate;
  • Working knowledge of computer software used in the construction industry.
  • Ownership of all hand tools that are required to perform any task contemplated. (TMG provides all power tools - except battery-powered screw guns and equipment);
  • Ability to work off hours, if required;
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus;

1 A grace period of up to six months may be allowed to obtain stated credentials.
