Description

Under general supervision, operate Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) spray trucks and hand sprayers to help control mosquito populations and protect public health. Use Windows-based tablets for mapping, recording treatment data, and ensuring compliance with operational protocols. Conduct mosquito spraying operations, larviaciding control work and mosquito activity surveillance for the County's Mosquito Control Department.

Shift: April-November Mon-Fri 8:00 PM to 4:30 AM, and weekends when mosquito activity is high

November-April 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM Mon-Thu, or 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM Mon-Fri

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Operate ULV spray trucks safely and efficiently in designated treatment areas.
  • Conduct pre-operation checks of the truck and equipment to ensure that all systems are safe and operating properly;
  • Use a Windows-based tablet to:
    - Navigate and follow mapping systems for spray routes.
    - Record treatment data and complete required documentation accurately.
    - Mix and load chemical products in accordance with established safety and environmental regulations.
    - Monitor weather conditions
  • Maintain spray trucks and calibrate mosquito spraying equipment to ensure proper application of pesticides;
  • Exchange, rebuild, overhaul and install motors on trucks and mosquito spraying equipment;
  • Sand, repair and refinish/paint automotive vehicle bodies;
  • Fill trucks and spray units with gasoline; prepare pesticide formulations and fill Spray unit with chemicals;
  • Survey ditches, marshes and freshwater areas and treats with larvicides when needed;
  • Complete daily reports, inventory logs and mileage records as required on operation forms;
  • Update maps and driving routes as instructed;
  • Maintain onsite buildings and grounds by performing heavy cleaning duties, such as cleaning bathrooms, vacuuming carpets, waxing floors, washing outside of buildings, weeding flowerbeds, trimming bushes and removing trash;
  • Perform other general labor and construction duties;
  • Attend professional activities, conferences and committees; obtain and maintain State required pesticide license.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Experience and Training Guidelines:

High school diploma or equivalent; AND three months of experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.

- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.

- Basic computer skills and familiarity with Windows-based tablets.

- Ability to work independently and follow detailed instructions.

- Willingness to work early mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed.

- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform tasks in varying weather conditions.

Knowledge of:
  • State and federal laws, rules and regulations governing mosquito control program operations;
  • Department policies, procedures and regulations covering specific areas of assignment;
  • Basic methods, techniques, principles and practices used in repair shops.
Skill in:
  • Reading and interpreting maps;
  • General maintenance of shops and vehicles;
  • Operating various tools and equipment typically used in vehicle repair and maintenance and small engine repair and maintenance; troubleshooting mechanical malfunctions;
  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships Using initiative, discretion and decision making within established procedures, guidelines and rules;
  • Defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts and drawing valid conclusions;
  • Working effectively within strict time frames and under pressure;
  • Providing effective work teams and efficient customer service;
  • Operating a personal computer and various software applications.


LICENSE & CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Texas Department of Agriculture Nonpolitical Pesticide Applicator License (post-employment)

Valid Texas Driver's License;

Respirator fit test (post-employment);

TFFA-C (post-employment);

ICS-100-200-700-800 (post-employment).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in an office, shop and outdoor work environment. May be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases. May be required to work in confined spaces. May be required to climb ladders and work at high locations. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
