The AI/ML Production Engineering team is looking for an exceptional Software Development Engineer with experience in Machine Learning (ML) infrastructure services and applications. This engineer will work with global teams focusing on projects for ML compute Platforms and model lifecycles. This engineer will be a qualified technical leader with a consistent track record who is able to identify and interpret problems from frontend of customer support, to backend infrastructure in a multi-cloud environment. This engineer will be able to identify and solve scaling issues for a variety of AIML focused services. This individual will have the opportunity to design and to build architectural solutions through cross-organizational collaboration, accurately addressing requirements, and solving complex problems. This role has high impact and is critical to creating the highest quality user experience that Apple internal and external customers expect and love!

Description

This Software Development Engineer role will encompass the entire lifecycle of ML platform reliability engineering. The engineer will address user queries or tickets, triage and mitigate issues, converting diagnosis processes and solutions from ad hoc to systematic, reactive to proactive, and manual to automatic. They will visualize ML platform scalability and stability, assessing their impact on development velocity and resource utilization. Based on the actual impact, they will prioritize engineering efforts across teams, enhancing the system’s key performance indicators. This role will undertake the following daily duties:

Ensure user queries or tickets are responded to in a timely manner.

Evaluate current visibility for state and performance of the system.

Define and monitor system key performance indices.

Design and implement operational tools.

As a technical leader, motivate and communicate across teams, driving the understanding of problems and the best practices of solutions.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to analyze problems in depth, determine root cause, articulate clearly, and propose solutions.

Solid understanding of system architecture and large-scale ML service and computational platform operations.

Proficiency in coding with scripting and programming languages, including but not limited to - Bash, Python, Golang.

Knowledge of ML training and production workflows, understanding dependencies among architectural building blocks.

7+ years of experience in software development for compute infrastructure or its operational stack, commensurate with operating cutting-edge hybrid cloud platforms.

Key Qualifications

Knowledge of ML, including LLM, as well as experience in developing real, large-scale ML jobs.

Knowledge of analytics methods and pipelines, able to utilize it for visualization of platform KPIs.

Experience in designing and implementing systems to support ML applications.

Experience in large-scale service and job deployment, using an orchestration framework (Kubernetes) and cloud services for large-scale projects.

Experience in observability of system behaviors, having made decisions on what should be visible according to actual needs to solve specific problems.

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $166,600 and $296,300, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple’s discretionary employee stock programs.
