Avionics Engineer

Karmanplus, Denver, Colorado, United States, 80285

Position: Avionics Engineer

Location: Denver, CO

Position Type: Full-time Mission : High Frontier – Own the Design, Integration, Testing, and Deployment of the Electrical Power Subsystem (EPS)

We’re Karman+, a scrappy space startup tackling ambitious projects with a lean, dedicated team. Our High Frontier mission demands a cutting-edge Electrical Power Subsystem (EPS) to generate, store, and distribute power for spacecraft operations. For this mission, we’re looking for an Avionics Engineer I to focus on the Power Processing Unit (PPU), solar panels, batteries, and battery management systems (BMS). This critical role will involve ensuring the reliable generation and management of power in space. If you excel in solving complex technical challenges, thrive in collaborative environments, and are ready to work on a fast-paced space mission, this role is for you. What it takes to be successful in this role:

As an Avionics Engineer (EPS Engineer), you’ll have end-to-end responsibility for the Power Processing Unit (PPU), solar panel systems, batteries, and battery management systems on the High Frontier mission. Your work will focus on the design, integration, testing, and deployment of these critical components to ensure the spacecraft’s power system operates reliably throughout the mission. This hands-on role is ideal for someone eager to dive into the technical details of power subsystem engineering while collaborating with a small, highly skilled team. You’ll be instrumental in optimizing the spacecraft’s energy systems to meet mission requirements under tight timelines. Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, and integrate EPS components, including the PPU, solar panels, batteries, and BMS, ensuring seamless performance and compatibility. Lead testing and validation of EPS hardware and software to ensure compliance with mission reliability and performance standards. Optimize the power architecture, balancing efficiency, redundancy, and reliability in a space environment. Troubleshoot and resolve complex power subsystem issues during integration and testing phases. Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., systems engineering, propulsion, thermal, mechanical) to ensure seamless integration of the EPS with the spacecraft. Manage relationships with suppliers and vendors to source and evaluate components, ensuring hardware meets mission specifications and deadlines. Identify, assess, and mitigate technical, schedule, and budget risks related to the EPS. Ensure all EPS components comply with regulatory and quality standards, serving as the primary gatekeeper for power system go/no-go decisions. Contribute to post-deployment analysis and performance optimization of EPS components. Make autonomous technical decisions on system architecture, hardware/software interfaces, and design trade-offs to meet mission requirements within schedule and budget constraints. What You Bring

Experience in avionics, electronics, or power systems engineering, with hands-on expertise in designing, integrating, and testing PPU, solar panel systems, batteries, and battery management systems. Ability to contribute to all phases of the EPS lifecycle, from concept through flight-readiness and post-deployment support. Strong troubleshooting skills for resolving hardware and software challenges in power subsystem testing and integration. Familiarity with procurement processes, including evaluation of off-the-shelf and custom hardware for compliance with mission requirements. Hands-on approach to technical problem-solving with a focus on mission success. Excellent communication skills to convey complex EPS topics to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Requirements

Foundational experience in avionics or electronics engineering for spacecraft applications. BS or MS in engineering, aerospace engineering, or related technical field. Additional Information
