The Computational Scientist will promote both conventional and deep machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) research throughout Roswell Park. This role involves brokering ML/AI engagements between Roswell Park researchers and the Information Technology department (IT), offering senior-level technical expertise to facilitate ML/AI demands. The candidate will work in close collaboration with various departments, including genomics, bioinformatics, and immunology, and serve as a subject matter expert in the area of ML/AI in oncology. The Computational Scientist is expected to stay up to date with state-of-the-art developments in medical imaging, machine learning, and AI, applying cutting-edge techniques to enhance research efforts across the institution. This position plays a key role in advancing medical imaging and radiomics research at Roswell Park. The candidate will collaborate with principal investigators (PIs) on grant applications and research projects related to image deidentification, segmentation, preprocessing, feature extraction, and building predictive models. They will also work with system architects on the development and application of in-house tools, such as nSight and Imagine, for data discovery and medical image pipeline execution. Responsibilities:
Promote and facilitate ML/AI research initiatives across Roswell Park. Collaborate on the design and execution of machine learning (ML) and radiomics-based research projects. Apply state-of-the-art Python-based tools (e.g., PyTorch, SciPy) for image segmentation, feature calculation, and model building. Stay up to date with the latest research in medical imaging, machine learning, and AI to ensure the application of cutting-edge techniques. Ensure proper image processing, including anonymization, segmentation, and outcome prediction model construction. Develop and manage containerized applications using Docker and Podman. Work with system architects to optimize and implement in-house tools for large-scale medical imaging workflows. Provide advanced training and user support for researchers in oncology-focused ML/AI applications. Hybrid work options are available. Salary range for this position is $120,984 - $147,726 annually which includes a comprehensive benefits package. Qualifications:
Required Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Machine Learning, Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or related field of science or engineering and the equivalent of three (3) years of full-time work experience applying machine learning to real-world problems and with AI frameworks and data analytics; or Associate's degree in Machine Learning, Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or related field of science or engineering and the equivalent of five (5) years of full-time work experience applying machine learning to real-world problems and with AI frameworks and data analytics; or High School diploma or High School Equivalency diploma and the equivalent of seven (7) years of full-time work experience applying machine learning to real-world problems and with AI frameworks and data analytics. Note:
Required degrees must have been granted by an accredited college or university or one recognized by Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center as following acceptable educational practices. Preferred Qualifications: Strong experience with Python, including libraries such as
PyTorch
and
SciPy . Familiarity with
radiomics tools
(e.g., PyRadiomics) and their application in medical imaging analysis. Experience with containerized environments, including
Docker
and
Podman . Experience with workflow orchestration tools like
Airflow
or similar tools. Experience working on medical image processing, segmentation, and radiomics. Proven track record of collaborating on grant applications and research projects in a medical or academic setting. Ability to stay up to date with
state-of-the-art
advancements in machine learning, medical imaging, and AI. PhD
in Machine Learning, Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Medical Imaging, or a related field. At least
three (3) years
