Scope and Responsibilities Stanford Research Computing is looking for an experienced Executive Director, Research Computing to lead a team of collaborative and innovative professionals. This role will lead Stanford Research Computing, reporting jointly to the Stanford University Vice Provost and Dean of Research and the Stanford University Chief Information Officer.
This position provides strategic vision for and serves as the head of research computing technology support for Stanford University, working in close collaboration with research faculty leaders and campus IT leaders.
Specific Responsibilities
Acts as a foremost technologist responsible for supporting existing and emerging needs of Stanford’s research communities.
Oversees daily operations of existing research computing technology support services.
Manages services through fact-based measurement, sound financial practices, and effective user-focused governance processes.
Maintains a faculty-centered lens to service definition.
Transcends institutional complexities to ensure integrated service delivery.
Responds to evolving regulatory requirements in close partnership with relevant offices.
Acts as a trusted thought leader, establishing a clear vision for research computing technology support.
Fosters strong relationships with academic departments and research centers.
Leads and mentors a high-performing team of research technology professionals.
Collaborates with the Chief Information Security and Privacy Officers to establish and maintain robust security measures.
Responsible for effective workforce planning.
Develops processes and systems to maximize uptime for mission-critical computing resources.
Responsible for developing, implementing, and stewardship of the capital and operations budget.
Effectively communicates complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Manages relationships with third-party vendors and service providers.
Key Selection Criteria
10-15 years of demonstrated experience in research computing technology support.
Knowledge of emerging trends in research computing technologies.
Proven ability to develop and execute plans for computing initiatives.
Strong team leadership skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Well-developed fiscal management skills.
Proven ability to manage change within the organization.
Well-developed risk management skills.
Required: Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and 12 years of related experience or equivalent.
Preferred: Ph.D. in a science or social science discipline.
The expected pay range for this position is $256,048 to $301,224 per annum.
