Yakima Valley College is accepting applications for one Custodian 2 position in the Administrative Services Division - Facility and Auxiliary Services. This is a full-time classified position, the beginning salary is $3,028 per month for 40 hours per week, with periodic increments up to $3,999, plus a full state benefits package.

The Custodian 2 performs and is responsible for those custodial tasks and duties that provide and assure safe, healthy, and clean facilities conducive to the educational process within a prescribed area of responsibility.

The Custodian 2 is subject to shift work, including weekends, holidays and early mornings or evenings as assigned by the Custodial Service Manager. Must be able to work overtime when needed, possibly even during periods of suspended operations for the rest of the campus. Reassignment of daily work schedule to cover other areas when needed.

This position will report to the Manager of Custodial Services or the Director (or Assistant Director) of Facility Operations depending on the assigned site.
Essential Tasks

  • Provide custodial services at assigned site; ensuring an attractive and sanitary environment for students, staff, and visitors.
  • Prepare and maintain campus facilities and campus events.
  • Uses power and hand tools appropriate to the custodial trade and level of responsibility.
  • Maintains/cleans/disinfects/prepares restrooms, kitchens, break rooms, laundry rooms, hallways, recreation room, foyers, stairways, and offices.
  • Refills/stock restroom dispensers, i.e., paper towels, toilet paper, feminine napkin, and soap dispensers.
  • Sets up rooms, conference areas, gym bleachers or floor covering as needed.
  • Maintains adequate stock of custodial and maintenance supplies in assigned area.
  • Assist in transporting custodial supplies from Central Receiving to Custodial Warehouse, or from Custodial Warehouse to individual building custodial areas.
  • Cleans/disinfects restroom fixtures and appurtenances.
  • Maintains, sweeps, mops, vacuums, and dust-mops a variety of floor surfaces.
  • Empties wastebaskets, trash containers, recycling bins, and other debris collection receptacles.
  • Replace light bulbs/tubes.
  • Communicates potential work/repair needed via the Megamations system or through other communication to the supervisor or designee.
  • Perform "deep cleaning" of all spaces within assigned areas; assists with deep cleaning of other areas as needed.
  • Use a variety of floor machines such as vacuums, polishers, carpet cleaners.
  • Washes interior/exterior walls, windows, and appurtenances to assure healthy and clean facilities with a "sustainable" approach that will not harm the occupant, the cleaning worker, the building, or the environment.
  • Preparation of building/check-in and out events and classroom/room setup.
  • May manually remove snow, debris, or other obstructions from sidewalks, stairs, entryways, or other spaces within the campus grounds.
  • Follows health and safety requirements set forth by the state, federal government, and the college district.
  • Lock and unlock buildings; secure buildings when facilities are not in use by checking for unlocked doors and windows; report any unauthorized occupants.
  • Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies and uses appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repair of custodial equipment, such as changing vacuum filters/belts, replacing plug ends of power cords, or topping off battery water cells.
  • May operate motor vehicles, motorized equipment, vertical/horizontal and articulating boom lifts to accomplish tasks and duties relative to the "basic function" of the position.
  • May move furniture, equipment, supplies, and tools to carry out assigned duties.
  • Participates in department and team meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Position requires a valid Washington State Driver's license.
  • A minimum of 18 years of age.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of two years collective experience in custodial work, preferably within an educational environment.
  • Knowledge and experience regarding proper disinfecting/sanitizing of surfaces.
  • Basic understanding of PC operation, MS Word, and Outlook.
  • Basic mechanical understanding and ability to learn.

KNOWLEDGE OF
  • Workplace safety practices, policies, and procedures to ensure the performance of safe work practices (eg SDS sheets).
  • Proper procedures, methods, equipment, and cleaning solutions for cleaning and sanitizing of surfaces, floors, etc.

ABILITY TO:
  • Be flexible in adapting to changes in priorities and assignments.
  • Read, write, follow written/oral directions in English.
  • Work independently on assignments without close supervision and be part of a team environment.
  • Identify minor building problems, and report repairs in writing to the department supervisor.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must lift, carry, push, and pull objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Bending at the waist; kneeling and squatting/stooping; repetitive arm/hand movement (extending the hands and arms to seize, hold, and grasp).
  • Reaching above shoulder level (including stretching upwards on tiptoe maintaining balance), and standing for long periods.
