Job Summary

The Phlebotomist - I plays a crucial role in ensuring the accurate collection and preparation of blood and other specimens from patients. This position requires expertise in blood draws and specimen handling, as well as the ability to put patients at ease, ensuring minimal discomfort while obtaining high-quality samples. The Phlebotomist works with patients across a broad demographic, contributing directly to high-quality care and patient satisfaction. Attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and strong communication skills are essential for success in this role.

Key Responsibilities
  • Specimen Collection and Preparation:
  • Perform blood draws and other specimen collections (e.g., urine, fecal) with minimal discomfort to patients.
  • Properly explain the collection process to patients in a clear, courteous manner.
  • Label specimens accurately, centrifuge, and record maintenance data as required.
  • Ensure proper specimen storage and handling according to established procedures, including temperature-sensitive storage and appropriate packaging for transport.
  • Specimen Handling:
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, ensuring 100% accuracy.
  • Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against orders to ensure accuracy before processing.
  • Compliance and Safety:
  • Adhere to OSHA and DEP regulations in all aspects of specimen collection and handling.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Ensure compliance with protocols for specimen integrity during transport.
  • Communication and Administrative Duties:
  • Answer telephone calls and assist with laboratory result inquiries.
  • Maintain and update patient information and specimen records accurately.
  • Attend annual department training sessions to stay current with practices and regulations.
  • Additional Duties:
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or department lead.


Required Qualifications
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Phlebotomy certification may be required depending on local regulations.
  • Experience: Prior experience in blood draws and specimen collection is preferred, but not required for entry-level roles.


Preferred Qualifications

Skills & Knowledge:
  • Proficiency in blood collection techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Strong communication skills to explain procedures to patients clearly and comfortably.
  • Familiarity with OSHA and DEP regulations related to specimen collection and handling.


Physical Requirements
  • Ability to perform blood draws and handle specimens throughout the day.
  • Ability to stand, bend, and move to access patient information and specimen supplies.

Certifications
  • Phlebotomy certification (if required by state or employer).
  • Ongoing training in safety protocols and department procedures.
