To work as a sign language interpreter in Washington, you need to be certified by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID):
  • National Interpreter Certification (NIC)
    This certification demonstrates that you have the professional skills and knowledge to perform a variety of interpretation and transliteration tasks. To earn the NIC, you need to:
    • Have a bachelor's degree
    • Pass the NIC Knowledge exam
    • Pass the NIC Performance exam
    • Complete several interviews
  • Provisional Deaf Interpreter Credential (PDIC)
    If you have a PDIC, you must submit either the NIC or the Certified Deaf Interpreter certification from RID after the PDIC expires
You can also earn specialized certifications for different positions and industries.
In Washington, you can register or renew your certification with the Office of Disability and Health (ODHH). To be approved, you'll need to provide:
  • Your DSHS background result
  • Your initial, approved RID/BEI certification
  • Your registration or renewal application
